I’m looking into going to Illinois next season for a deer hunt. Yall have any recommendations on where to go? Also is first or second gun season better? Thanks in advance.

If you’re a rifle hunter, consider states where the rifle you normally hunt with is legal and gun season is open during the rut. Oklahoma, Missouri, Kentucky. Also, consider Canada.

Illinois is draw for gun. 2nd season is easier. Rut is usually early November and 1st gun is late November and then I think 2nd gun is early December and can coincide with the 2nd rut. But early December can be cold as frick. Well both can be I guess, so keep that in mind.

If the 1st season is warm there’s usually very limited movement due to the main rut being mostly over. If the weather is good, you can get some rutting activity anytime in November and early December so it doesn’t matter a ton.

A friend of mine, now deceased, once lived in Bloomington, IN. and I spent some time up at his place a few times over the years.

That state seems to be lousy with deer and several night rides with him into more rural areas was insane with the amount of deer seen at just about every turn in areas with open land.

My family for several generations grew up farming the fertile grounds of Puke and Calhoun counties of Illinois. I still have so many family members around Pittsfield and Kampsville.

Ive killed deer in 5 states and none have been as nice as the ones i killed on the old farm over there. I assume it's still shotgun and not rifle, at least it was when I used to extensively hunt the area.

Big deer over there. They're definitely eating well.

I normally use a.30-06 but I also have a.45-70 that I am proficient with so I am not concerned about that.

Please tell me you meant Pike County. I don’t think I want to visit a county with vomit in the name. Have you heard anything from Heartland Lodge in Pike County?
