Interesting suggestion.
But then wouldn't it just be privatized gov bs that ruins the "freedom" of public lands?

I feel like the WMA experience would be better for most if they went to a lottery system.

Really just worried about catching a stray from a trigger happy guy

As what shexter said you just have to walk a little further and you’ll be good.
This is my first season hunting public and I enjoy it aside from hiking 5+ miles round trip.
There are lots of good hunting opportunities on public land in LA. I’m speaking from deer hunting experience there but most of those guys are pretty respectful of each other.
What exactly do you plan on hunting?

Not necessarily,a friend of mine used to hunt Williana every year for either sex weekend. He killed a buck 8 years in a row out of the same tree,he was close to the highway where he could hear cars going by.
He was scared to death of getting lost in the woods so he would hunt close,to the highway.

Deer mainly. I absolutely love duck hunting but have always hunted with someone that knew how to work a call and I don't lol
Plan on trying to learn this summer so that I can actually hunt. That and hopefully by then I am able to afford a shite box boat lol

If you are going to bow hunt, you can be extremely successful if you put the scouting time in. If you hunt early morning, don't be afraid to walk around for a couple hours after the hunt (say 11-1 or 12-2) to look for fresh sign. After the rut is over, the bucks start grouping back up (and the does do also) so you can find where they like to bed, feed, and walk. January is a great time for bow hunting because the bucks are still coming out in the daylight to feed.
After the season ends, do some scouting whenever you can. You'll find their late season spots... remember those spots for late next season. In the spring and early summer, do some scouting in the mornings to find some early season spots. Once the rut starts going, all bets are off since they split up and are cruising. You might be able to find a certain buck's home territory if you're lucky.
Bottom line, look at apps like OnX, find some terrain features that you think might be promising, and put boots on the ground to scout those areas. Those spots might be really close to parking, or they might be miles out. Deer don't know how far away they are supposed to be. Me personally, I go deep in the woods because I don't like seeing other people when I'm out there hunting. To each their own.

Yep, sometimes if you can find the spot you think the deer will go through as they spook out from other hunters moving around, that's better than where you scouted a bunch of sign that night have been from a week ago.

I suck with a bow but am debating getting either a crossbow or compound for Christmas and just start practicing with it. And yeah I plan on doing as much scouting as possible. I like being out there more than being around people so
Really wanting to get enough to get my own lease or something. Just too darn expensive right now. But the idea of having somewhere I can work and cultivate and make prime for hunting just gets me going lol probably YEARS away for me but a man can dream lol

Cenla has lots of public land to hunt.
Dewey Wills, Ft Polk, Peason Ridge, Kisatchie, etc
Lots of opportunities. Lots of deer. And lots of hunters. But if you do your homework and scout, you can find deer quite easily.
Study the regs/seasons, and plan your hunts. Be mobile. Be patient (with deer and other hunters), and you will have lots of success.
If you get good with a bow, you can remove a lot of the other hunters problem. And you will have more opportunities to hunt.

The woods really aren't that crowded besides the either sex rifle and primitive weekends. Every baw in Louisiana hunts for those.
Get into bow/crossbow hunting because you'll essentially get 4 months to hunt deer. There's a very small amount of bow hunters compared to what you see during gun hunts.
Stay away from Spring Bayou WMA. The coonasses there aren't worth dealing with. Hunting is supposed to be fun and adventurous, not a boxing match with idiots who claim their ancestors from the 18th century started that place.
Kisatchie is HUGE and easier to get away from other hunters. Their peak season is relatively early compared to Avoyelles.
As for duck hunting, some of the absolute worst human beings in this state are duck hunters. I quit hunting them because there's more trashy young punks trying to be the next Duck Dynasty crew than ducks themselves. These dudes will let you bang their ol lady before they let you get near "their spot".

I grew up in CenLa and have hunted pretty much every piece of public land around at one time or another. My favorite for deer is Dewey Wills (I still call it Saline).
What WMA are you nearby? That should be the one you hunt for this year.

Walk
Put distance between yourself and others. Most public land hunters won’t get more than a mile off a road. And in my opinion, a mile is a stretch. I’d say it’s more like half a mile.
Hunt All Day
Be in the stand when guys begin getting down in the mornings and returning in the afternoons. They’ll push deer over you.

I used to hunt out in Saline and Muddy Bayou!
I have the Elbow Slough right next to Dream Hunt

find the sweet spot (just far enough to get away from the people that hunt off of the road, but not all of the way in the back) that's where most people go. think minimalist i.e. light lock on, saddle etc. This allows you to be mobile. I strictly hunt public land and enjoy it. I usually find my success from 10-2, this coincides with when people are leaving and entering. if you can find where people are squirrel hunting with dogs it will help you out big time.
