I say this because a 6 year old that is little for his age is very possibly just too young. But that's more about his mentality than his size or age

I am 44 and have been using a 7mm-08 for years. I have never had a deer run more than 25 yards. Great little round with hardly any recoil.

Sounds like the gun probably doesn’t fit him well. How a gun fits is the biggest factor in how shootable it is for a kid. More so than caliber within reason.

Bought mine the Savage 7mm-08. Great gun and great round. In days he doesn't want to hunt I'll actually take it for me instead of my 30-06.

Fits him great. You find a 8 yo that can mount a rifle freehand and be good enough to hold steady enough to shoot a game animal and you have found the exception.

One that I really didn’t think about but would be an awesome round for kids is the 6.5 CM
I just rebarreled my ar-10 with a 6.5cm barrel. It’s a semi- of course but there is so little recoil on that gun.
I haven’t put it on the chrono but it should be pushing a 143 grain bullet around 2500-2600fps. Could shoot a 120 grain if needed.

I started my kids when they were 6 with a Rem model 7 youth .223. I lowered the trigger pull some and bought several boxes of cheap hunting ammo for them to practice. I was concerned about them flenching from recoil of a larger caliber. I felt bullet placement was more important. Anyhow, if you choose a .223, only use Barnes X bullets to hunt with!!!! They killed several deer with it. I didn't have to track too many. I sold the gun when they got older and bought them a larger caliber.

I'm in my mid-twenties and I still shoot the same .243 I started with. It's dropped every deer I've hit with it and is more than enough for my hunting situation. I've the need arises, I'll upgrade.

My wife uses a 25-05 and loves it. Her mother shoots a 243 unless they are buck hunting in which case they use a 270.

Had this same dilemma a couple a months ago. Bought a 5.56/223 in an AR platform for my 7 year old mainly because my 7 year old is a little fella and the stock can be adjusted down to a youth size. My first AR, and man it's fun and is a tack driver.
Got some Barnes VOR-TX in 70 grain and I've killed two does with it already (Arkansas had a special doe only private land hunt this year). First shot was your normal front shoulder shot. Doe went 40 yards and crumpled up. Good blood trail and exit wound was about quarter size. Second doe was a head shot; have I mentioned how fun this thing is to shoot?

Same. I've never had the need for a larger bullet. I'm comfortable shooting up to 250 yards and I have never had to track a runner because they never run.

My 7 yr old (at the time) shot his with a Browning micro A-bolt in .308. I use the Hornady reduced recoil. Dropped his first deer at 107 yds. Remember it Like it was yesterday (3 yrs ago). TOPC III is seven and up this year. Shooting same gun. Oldest weighed about 40 pounds. Youngest weighs about 60 pounds.

Another thought on shot placement. Assuming you go with the .223, and he shoots it really well (again at feeder distance). Don't hesitate to teach him to neck shoot. Not high in the neck but in that big flat spot at the base of the neck. A kid has no preconceived ideas about where to shoot a deer. My BIL taught his son to neck shoot from the get go when he was like 7 years old. He's 38 years old now and still neck shoots almost all of his deer to this day. Kids have an innate sense of confidence when they start out shooting well on paper. Generally a neck shot will be lethal or a clean miss. A deer with it's head down eating at a feeder is an easy neck shot. Small caliber flat shooting high velocity rounds are deadly in the neck.

Looking at a cva scout or hunter chambered in .44 mag for my daughter in the next few years.

I'm in the same boat right now. Looking for one for my 7 year old daughter and the other daughter is two so I need to get it right.
My buddy has a 308 for his daughter and she is shooting the reduced recoil load. Says it kicks just a little worse than a .22 and she's not scared of it at all. I think the 7mm08 would be very comparable.

For all in tents and porpoises when it comes to deer, they’re the same thing.

AR in 6.5 Grendel. Kicks like a 243. Bigger heavier more ballistically efficient bullet that will take down anything that moves in LA. AR platform's adjustability will allow the rifle to grow with him. Cheap steel case wolf ammo for plinking. Great factory loads from Hornady for serious shooting.

Not to hijack but picking up my 6.5 Grendel AR from Sulzer this week. Curious on factory loads for white-tail. Is that Hornady load pretty good?

This is what I bought my son when he was 7. He's killed a couple deer with it and so have I. I did this so it could be used down the road as a primitive weapon. Looking back, I kind of wished I'd have gotten him a 7mm-08 so he could have used it long term. I wound up buying him a .308 when he got a little older.
