I don't understand "conservatives" anymore. They claim to want limited government, fiscal responsibility, lower taxes, less spending, etc. etc. but Idolize Donald Trump who did none of those things. (Yes he had a tax cut but he raised Tariffs so high they paid more in tax overall)
There is no reasoning with either side these days. Its my team vs their team.
Right now the Republicans think they are winning sending illegals to liberal states but the Liberals think they are winning because some people are helping them... and in one case they literally charted a bus and sent the people right back to where they came from and that was helping.
It is a lose lose until the people stand up to the government, right now the government has the people fighting the people and it is bad for all of us.

My grandpa spent his last years glued to FOX News at maximum volume and living in fear all the other times.
I have friends/family that went so far down the TDS rabbit hole that they couldn't have normal conversations anymore.
It's pretty damn sad.

You didn't mention how old this person is. Elders often see the world changing in ways they don't understand, at a time in their life when it's difficult for them to adapt to new things and ideas. Radio, cable TV and the internet have figured out how to exploit these fears for views and clicks.
There's a lot of concern about teen susceptibility to social media influences. Their grandparents are equally at risk in their own way.

Standing up to the government was using your vote to vote for the guy that wasn’t a career government official. We have people in Washington that have been there longer than I’ve been alive. Including the current President.
