They successfully hid Biden in his basement throughout his entire campaign against Trump. His only public interactions were gaffes and incoherent rambling. His base still absolutely adored him because they hated Trump more.
Never underestimate the stupidity of people, or what they're willing to be hypocrites about when it comes to their party candidate. And yes, that goes for both "sides".

Oh I totally get what you're saying. Katie Hobbs in AZ and Spanberger in VA were elected with a strategy of basically avoiding the press and refusing to answer any questions. It will be much harder to pull that off for a presidential race, without pandemic protocols and a free twitter. But I have zero doubt they'll give it a try. AOC will also have the headwinds of Mamdani's mayorship in NYC, which will be real world applications for all the stupid shite she talks about. It's going to be a spectacular and public flame out and she will have to defend it. I don't think she's up for it.
