A poster yesterday compared Robert E Lee to Hitler

Don't need to list but one. Hero of the Mexican American War.

He sacrificed himself for the honour of Virginia. No truer a calling.
He rebelled against his country and killed thousands of Americans in defense of slavery.
It's possible to also acknowledge that he struggled with that decision, that he was a fine military mind, and that he conducted himself honorably in public and private. Indeed it's been written about so goddam much that I don't know a single person in the south who couldn't tell you it. He is, let's be 100% clear, in no danger of being erased from history or any other such nonsense because we decide to remove a few statues.
For all his honor and virtue, the man botched the biggest decision of his life. Shame.

Lee couldn't and wouldn't kill his fellow Virginians. Lee's decision had nothing to do with slavery. And had the South agreed to end the conflict in 1861 in exchange for slavery in perpetuity in the Southern states, the Union would have agreed.
So would you kill your fellow South Carolinians if they wanted to break away and form their own country? I couldn't and wouldn't. He didn't botch his decision in any sense of the word.

No he wasn't.
He committed treason.

Lee rightfully defended the State of Virginia, and the Confederacy, from an illegal invasion and a willful violation of the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution.
Youve been taught the Great Lie. It's all about States Rights, not slavery.

Washington DC.
Figures. That explains it all.

I wish the South honored some of the our veterans from other wars half as much as the CSA. We all know these statues are coming down some day. Might as well trade for something you really want.
My suggestion is to have the Feds build us some awesome Civil War Museums etc..

But he also didn't have to lead a war against the US.
He could have retired and not fought.
Decisions have consequences, and his led to him being a traitor.

Look up Southern Revisionist History.
You've been taught the great lie.

Lee helped kill 100,000's of troops in the name of slavery. And yes, Lee was a cruel slave owner.

That depends. Do they want to break away and form a country that subjugates and enslaves people based on their race? Because I would not fight for SC in those circumstances and I would hold in the lowest regard anyone who would.

Slavery wasn't some tertiary issue leading to secession. You don't get to disavow one of the primary reasons for the conflict, especially if you're the leader of the army fighting to uphold it. When he embraced VA and the CSA, he embraced what they were fighting for and what they stood for and their economic system. Period.

Not by Grant.
Grant thought he was mediocre and not even the best general he fought against in that war.

Pretermitting for now this absurd question, the real issue is, why ... You know what, I'm over it. I am tired of feeding trolls. Goodnight children.

If someone invades your home, are you going to fight back or just retire? Lee's home was in Arlington, a stone's throw from where an army was being amassed to invade his homeland. The first major battle of the war was at Manassas. More battles were fought in Virginia than in any other state. It was a wasteland in 1865.
The war was fought in the South. It wasn't the Yankees who had to worry about their homes being destroyed or burned, their families being killed and their communities ruined. That's why so many Southerners who had no stake in slavery or didn't own slaves fought.

Maybe the South shouldn't have attacked the North first.
Decisions have consequences
ETA: also, what about those in the South who didn't want to secede and were subjugated by tyrannical southern armies and forced to fight?

Yet he was apparently cool with killing American patriots. He's a traitor to this country and no amount of revisionist bullshite will change that.
This would all be a moot point if Lincoln knew how to properly win.
