The students think the research and work opportunities will help on their resumes and in their careers. It's totally ridiculous what happened to this young woman. I'm sure she was concerned about the environment prior to getting to the university, but the reality is you can go to college in Chicago, Birmingham, Atlanta or at Brown and get murdered.
Look at what happened to the young woman riding public transit in Charlotte, North Carolina. I'm not saying this to defend Brown University or Providence. There is risk everywhere.

Apparently, it was a study group and the prevailing thought is that it was targeted, most likely the young girl.
The president of Brown is a Trainwreck. 6 hours after the shooting and she didn't even know what was happening in the classroom when the shooting occured. They mayor is just as bad. He's trying to go way out on the "one community" approach and give feel good stories, while he gets peppered by media about the shooter and threats.
The absolute biggest thing that sticks out to me is the video of the suspect walking slowly with his hands behind his back. Very, very few Americans walk like that, especially those under 30. I can't recall seeing anyone but foreigners, elderly, walking that way. Dead giveaway.

But given it seems targeted, probably somebody who has issues with a certain persuasion either it be whites, conservatives, women, Christians

Maybe Brown deleted it because they are trying to cover their arse. And, notwithstanding your scoffing at folks speculating the perp was either a tranny or Muslim - looks like it/they/them/whatever are a tranny Muslim.

One is female, the other is male.
One is European, the other is Central Asian
One is Christian, the other (from his name and home country) is probably Muslim
What group do you envision as being your hypothetical "target?"
If it is White, female Christians, the shooter's success rate was pretty low.
