I'm not even suggesting that socialism was a good answer. But to suggest that Venezuela was some sort of prosperous paradise where there was a robust working and middle class belief the reality that had been brewing there for better than a decade prior to Chavez. GDP had been crashing for years. Stagnation, etc. Riots in 1989.....and the entrenched power there would do nothing overall to address the problem. So the poorer types turned to someone who was offering and promising a radical alternative.
People don't radically change their governing power because things go a little bad. It happens when it becomes totally non responsive to the people that they will accept rat on a stick if the previous guy was only offering fly soup.
