I remember when the DoE wanted to force Common Core on all the states, and that’s reason enough to get rid of a central authority over school systems.

I don't remember that. I do remember when the DOE tried in the 60s to get people to start using the metric system more in the US. Then again, the Department of Energy engages in a lot of science based on metric system measurements...so that probably makes sense.

Education is ripe for major disruption. We've got an industrialized system for a post industrial world. I don't know enough about the function of the DoE to really comment, but I'd bet it has a negative effect on the innovation side of things.

Personally I'm hoping for something like adaptive AI companions for each kid that helps them learn the best way they are able, but that's just my futurist day dream.

There never should have been a DoE. Wake up.

I disagree. The Atomic Energy Commission had outlived its usefulness and the transition to the Department of Energy model in the 1974 change made sense.

It should be run at the state level, most anything the federal government touches, they screw up.

The DoE could probably be overhauled but US schools are way ahead in Science and Technology, something you dont know shite about going to podunk high!

What was the US ranked prior to the establishment of DOE?

Since the establishment of DOE, the US has transformed into a net importer to a net exporter of energy. Meaning US Production has increased faster than our energy consumption since the 1974 act establishing DOE. While the US would have been ranked among the top countries prior to the establishment of DOE...that transition from net importer to net exporter is critical.

What were we in the 60's before the DoE? Why did we need it all of a sudden in the 70's? Look at the path it has taken since.

Under the AEC, the US was a net importer of energy. Under the DOE, the US is a net exporter...that is a good path to take.

I’ve been pu in a position where paying for my sons education is the reality because the DOE destroyed the public system since its inception. frick them.. I say that as nobody wants better public education more than those who feel forced to pay for private.

For the record, ED is the official initialism for the Department of Education.

Using the federal govt as a source of funds is outrageously inefficient. You'd be better off with a tax cut, and instead a tax credit for any services you pay out of pocket, while abolishing the entirety of the DOE.

What's the framework schools will follow if the DoE is eliminated?, you didnt think about that, just throw something up to see if it sticks??

Wait, is the Federal Gov't the only entity capable of creating a framework?

Regardless of which ranking is correct if you are spending more than any other country shouldn't we be ranked 1 or 2?

The cost per pupil may be higher than other countries either way that doesn't justify eliminating the DoE, moving it to the state level or auditing & scaling back sure.

Having roughly 70% of your students not reading at grade level does justify it.

I could’ve bought a lake house. Put two kids through private school instead.

Public schools are a joke. We should be embarrassed.

Simple. Abolish the Dept of Education. Make any expenditures towards special education a refundable tax credit on your income taxes for anyone that needs it. For anyone that can't foot the bill immediately shift that legwork to the school district.

Name one aspect of prep education that has improved over the past 40 years.

My former sister-in-law was a NYC teacher years ago. She complained the DOE sent out all kinds of useless pamphlets, plans and materials that ended up in storage space because it was illegal to dispose of them.

The Dept of Education is an explicit and continuous impediment to actual education.

They’re a nest of Cultural Marxists bent on destroying the country. Some of them know it. Some of them don’t.

Everyone has been referring to the elimination of DOE...which is the US Department of Energy...so, I've just been answering questions until people realize that the DOE is not the Department of Education.

I guess that is something that they didn't learn in school...which could be blamed on Ed (or DoEd), rather than DOE (unless you want to blame the Department of Energy's PR department for not being better known).
