Exactly. There's a long history of Hispanics in Louisiana. Many from before the Revolutionary War.

St. Malo, in what is now St. Bernard Parish (near Shell Beach), was the first permanent Asian settlement in the United States. The settlement dated back to the mid-1700's and was destroyed by the 1915 Hurricane.

Yep, also in Saint Bernard are the Isleños, which wiki says "are an ethnic group living in the U.S. state of Louisiana, consisting in people of primarily Canarian Spanish descent. Most of its members are descendants of settlers from the Canary Islands who settled in Spanish Louisiana during the 18th century, between 1778 and 1783." They mostly settled along Bayou Terre-aux-Boeufs (Tierra de Bueyes) in the area they called "San Bernardo del Torno. By the end of the 1780s, the simple name San Bernardo or 'Saint Bernard', the patron saint of Bernardo de Gálvez, was being used for the settlement in documents describing the area."

I’ve never met a Cajun who can’t speak English

You don’t have to let go of all your past culture but you need to assimilate into your new American culture. Cajuns have assimilated fine just like Irish, Italians, etc.

On the Perez thing. I knew a whole bunch of them from St Bernard and Plaquemines ( knew the Judge's family). All the old folks all spoke French and would laugh about the Spanish heritage. " Yeah we are French speaking Spaniards living in America" .

Judge Perez I'm told grew up only speaking French. All the Perez's on the St Bernard side all looked like Germans

My grandmother spoke Cajun and had to learn English to attend school as a child.
Saving the Cajun culture and language can't be compared to the threat our
nation faces today from todays illegal immigrants. Cajuns readily identify as Americans and do not pledge allegiance to another country.

Of course. Their colonial descendents are all good.

It doesn’t bother me when someone doesn’t speak English. It’s problematic for them, not me. It doesn’t bother me if they don’t assimilate fully either, as long as they’re not committing crimes. It’s a free country.

Cajuns were established in Louisiana many many years before Louisiana became a US Territory and then a state. No one is forcing Cajuns who already speak English, and observe American traditions to abandon them.

Not the flex you think it is. Post better

Exactly. It’s a subculture, not a competing culture. It’s like asking us how we feel about groups wanting to preserve Square Dancing. Who cares?
