In 2023, 23,959 passenger vehicle occupants were killed. Nearly 50% of those killed were not buckled (based on known seat belt use).

Seat belts saved an estimated 14,955 lives and could have saved an additional 2,549 people if they had been wearing seat belts, in 2017 alone.

The consequences of not wearing, or improperly wearing, a seat belt are clear:

So the majority that died were buckled.

Seat belts save lives. I’ve witnessed a family van get into a bad wreck. The ones not wearing seat belts ended up in the back seat piled on each other. The mom was critical, her 2 daughters dead. Grandpa and grandma buckled up and were hurt bad but both survived. They were T-boned by a drunk driver but can’t imagine the guilt that grandpa felt for not making sure everyone was wearing a seat belt.

Seatbelt laws have demonstrably saved lives and reduced serious injuries, thereby lessening the overall burden to society?
I wear a seatbelt because it’s smart, not so much because it’s law.

I don't doubt the wisdom of using seatbelts... but your quote doesn't do a lot to prove it.

It presents a fact; actual deaths and belted vs unbelted- that leans slightly in favor of unbelted.

Then it presents an "estimated" number of belted lives saved, compounded by an even more "estimated" number of lives that "could" have been saved.

The only FACT presented proves a tossup slightly against seatbelt usage.

You think insurance prices are high now? People that aren’t wearing seatbelts are going to have way more traumatic injuries and much costlier hospital stays.

It makes no sense that a state that has a seatbelt mandate doesn't also have a motorcycle helmet mandate.

Laws which protect individuals from themselves are violations of personal freedom. If the goal is saving lives or money from injuries then govt should ban cars or put highway speed limits at 10 mph. Govt should give tickets to anyone over normal body weight. It could be $10 per pound. Sky diving would be banned. The list goes on.

Go talk to any veteran state trooper about what he has seen on the highways over the years, and I think that you might change your mind.

I make my kids wear helmets even when they ride scooters. It’s not worth the risk.
my state doesn't have a helmet law for motorcycles but, IMO, only an idiot would get on a motorcycle without one. Aside from the obvious danger involved in an accident, I had a carpenter bee hit my faceshield at 50mph and it sounded like a .22 bullet.

You don't have to wear seatbelts. You can drive on your property without seatbelts, without insurance, and drunk if you'd like.
If you aint got no property, then you're fukked

Seatbelts also keep you from slamming the roof of the car and messing up your back for the rest of your life. It keeps you in the seat.

People mention motorcycles. When the motorcycle comes to an abrupt stop the person goes flying off it. That’s what you are doing, but inside a car.

I'm against paying for poor lifestyle choices.

Poor lifestyle choices like obesity and not wearing a helmet translate into billions of dollars in healthcare costs every year, and on an individual level, they mean thousands of dollars more in medical bills and lost productivity.
