My source on the inside says that SNAP is often used to buy soft drinks and other non-nutritional items to resell for cash. Eliminating these items from SNAP will make it harder to turn SNAP into cash. That is likely what is the main objection to nutritional requirements.

We are the only country on planet earth where our 'poor' are morbidly obese. Everywhere else they are skinny. Speaks volumes.

The folks that make and sell those soft drinks are also fighting behind the scenes to make certain that SNAP restrictions do not include their products... Same for convenience store selling junk food and prepared meals at a hot bar - they fight tooth and nail to have "EBT accepted here"....

None of it should be allowed for purchase utilizing the SNAP monies...

Yes, obesity rates are higher among lower income groups.

ETA: SNAP needs to be limited to basics. Should be milk, eggs, bread, grains, fresh fruit and veggies, milk, water, juice, chicken, pork, ground beef, and a handful of other items

My tax money shouldn't be going towards people buying candy, sodas, junk food, and other unhealthy shite that's just going to mean more of our tax money spent on these same people for medicaid expenses. And no more delicacies either like spending SNAP on steaks and seafood.

Exactly.

We are institutionalizing these folks, not helping them. Making them feel comfortable in their situation is the wrong way to approach any problem.

It's both. Campaigns don't fund themselves and people running for office don't usually run on cutting government benefits.

I don’t want tax dollars going towards junk food and drinks

If as a free American you want to enjoy the freedom to eat whatever crap you like, go get a job to pay for it

Right. I was specifically referring to Michelle Obama's desire to make school lunch nutritious. She did try, but corporations wouldn't allow if. Pizza sauce is considered a vegetable for school lunches.

It's really misguided to think limiting the types of food you can purchase with SNAP is somehow going to curb the health crisis in America.

Looks like "Nutrition" is another N-word that's tripping you up.

Interesting. I've seen people use their EBT to buy food to cook plates, then selling the plates for cash. I saw this A LOT when I was teaching. I haven't seen people selling junk food to cash, but I'm sure that happens too.

What do you mean by this?

I ask because this came up recently in the thread in which everyone was cheering Trump for re-instating the President's Physical Fitness Test (which I am in no way opposed to).

I pointed out that I would guess a large percentage of the people cheering Trump were booing M. Obama for trying to improve the nutritional quality of school lunches.

Opposition to that one was always a head scratcher for me. To me it seems like doing exactly what is being proposed with regard to SNAP. The government can't control what people eat, but it can damn sure control what it gives people to eat, and since it's being funded with taxpayer money I can't see any downside to someone attempting to be as responsible as possible with regard to it.

I was then informed that it wasn't the concept that everyone objected to but the implementation. So if you have some insight as to the implementation, I would genuinely be interested to hear it.

How many college students are buying $500 of steaks and seafood every month?

Not only that but another angle: how many college students are buying $300 per month for Little Debbie’s? Not that many because they are smarter than to use their limited resources on sugar and additives.

So removing some of the crap from the list of foods they can buy will have zero effect? NONE! ZILCH!

Small affect sure but it damn sure will not be zero.

So if you dont make enough money to cover food expenses, get fricked you eat what the government tells you to eat. However if you make enough money to cover food expenses then by all means eat whatever the frick you want. Such a bizarre mentality.

Such a bizarre mentality to think if you take something for free at the expense of others it should come with no strings attached.
