If you exclude civil rights, it was a much better place.
Economically, we were totally dominant. We had a manufacturing base with good paying jobs for high school grads.
Fiscally, very little debt. The sky was the limit.
Immigration policy was much more rational.
Both parties were still patriotic loyal Americans.
Now, the debt alone is pretty unmanageable. You have a deep state in charge. Communists run thins. Cities are more out of control.
If I could be 20 years old in 1960, and we could avoid all the war and racial strife, I would go back.

I'm saying it now. I'm almost 70 and the country has changed and it's a far better place now than it was when I was ten years old.
I would like for you to give some details on your opinion. We could use a positive perspective.
Of course, civil rights for black Americans and for women have improved. And technology has made life easier. Are these the things you are talking about?

Whichever side you end up on, I hope I’m on the other one.

I think that the plebes who are under the spell of the critical theorist crowd, such as your run-of-the-mill social justice warrior down at the university or church, are unaware of the end game of their cultural marxist masters who are using repressive tolerance to undermine the language and culture of the social order that we have thrived on for these past 250 years in this country.
If you think that the very foundations of our country are eroding, that is intentional. We are indeed in the middle of a metaphysical war that has been raging hot and cold since the age of the Enlightenment. Their methods have been tweaked specifically for the American experiment, and racial agitation is their primary weapon, along with gender issues.

Are you aware the civil war was 150 years ago?

Yes.
Are you aware that the French Revolution was over 200 years ago?

What’s your point? Obviously America’s culture and values have drastically changed in the last 250 years considering there was a civil war over the culture and values

I agree with most of your points other than #4.
I have two sons in law who are in the military, one is a Capt in the army, the other is a Gunnery Sgt in the 5th Marines. Both served 3 combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I just spent a week out at Camp Pendelton and I didn't see anyone out of shape, I saw hundreds of marines that would kick your arse up and down the west coast for calling them lazy and fat.
Neither of them has ever seen a transgender person in the military and they have a combined almost 30 years in. There certainly aren't any trans pilots or ship capitians.
Ragging on the current shape of the country is a fair target, but calling the military fat and out of shape, that's just bullshite and detracts from your other valid points.

1) Illegal immigrants are overrunning us.
This is a problem, but it’s not unsolvable. Only a few months ago the flow over the border was a trickle. It’s not like we have forgotten how to secure a border. And frankly, I actually look at the growing Hispanic population as a positive (not that I want them entering illegally) - they are conservative and hard working, and the first generation largely uneducated want their kids educated. If conservatives had half a brain they’d rescue them from today’s shitty public schools and win their vote for a generation.

2) Our debt is something like, what, $27 trillion? This isn't sustainable. Indeed, we are past the point of no return already
It’s already been pointed out that inflation will take care of some of this, but here’s another thought. Our debt is $27 trillion- okay, but what’s the value of our assets? What do “we the people” own? Is it worth a trillion? $20 trillion? $100 trillion? Look at the federal government and all its moving parts like a business and consider how leveraged we are or aren’t. More than our level of debt being a problem, it’s how little we are getting out of the spending that pisses me off.
quote:
4) Our military is a joke now with its wokeism. Most of out troops are fat, out of shape and weak. Too many transgender fighter pilots and ship captains. China and Russia are belly laughing at us.
I’m not happy about recent happenings, but there are some obvious fixes. I’m pissed about what’s happening, which is different from being scared about it.
quote:
6) We are divided politically. Over the decades we have allowed communist doctrine to infiltrate our schools, our media and Hollywood. But now it has infiltrated not just local governments, but the federal government. I don't see this declining, but only intensifying.
We need to be better at electing representatives. Sometimes we forget that those Rhinos are in office because of us.
We should consider a convention if states. We need to get smarter about consuming media. And you’re right, we need to wrest control of our schools back. Don’t forget - we (the largely conservative to middle of the road middle class/upper middle class) pay for most of this shite. Start defunding what’s not working for us and see how quickly things change.
I think the defeatist attitude is way premature. You are buying into the media that you know is fake. The country isn’t teetering on implosion, though I might start hitting people if we don’t get rational about Covid. A majority of Americans are not down with the bullshite we’ve seen the last 18 months. But not all of them see things like we do. That’s okay. It’s on us to help them with that picture, and fantasizing about a breakup or armed conflict that’ll never happen doesn’t help.

You only missed one thing. I park my truck in the driveway, not garage. Here’s the deal. No doubt we have significantly more comforts right now than back then. And the country went through turmoils that a modern person would struggle to live through the experience.
What the OP is about is America is on the brink of failure. “Name a worse time” is in response to Mickey Goldmill saying people in the past worried we were about to fail too. My claim still stands that this is the most likely time we’ve had of the country failing, despite the major crises you listed.

And now we’re back to demonizing skin color, have laws awarding specific races and the Democrat party is back to pushing segregation in many cases. Racism is getting worse, not better.

If we were that close to some sort of catastrophic period, I think the Right would be doing more than bitching and warehousing ammo they’ll never use.
Let me ask you an honest question - if you really think the end of the republic is around the corner, what are you doing about it? Seems to me “the end is near” is a big time for action.
ETA - and don’t get me wrong, I think we need to start becoming politically and economically engaged like we haven’t been in decades. My point is we’re not in such a desperate place that it can’t be fixed.
