He was one of the 2nd tier civil rights players who were paid to be puppets and convince other black people that the party that vehemently fought against them for over a hundred years, is really the party that loves and supports them, and the party that actually did fight for them and support them, are the ones who hate them. It worked. Was a time when the black community was united behind people like mlkj and X. Was easy to use puppets to lead them in certain directions.
