The Holy Family went to Egypt which had a large Jewish community in the Alexandria area. They would have been welcomed by their own people and integrated seamlessly until they returned to Judea. It was more like a long visit than seeking refuge.

Can you tell me where in Egypt they “fled” to? I'm not sure of their exact location in Egypt.

How long were they there? Until Herod died.

Did they leave and return home???? Yes. They settled in Nazareth.

They were definitely seeking refuge.

If you are running from the government that is actively trying to kill you, you are a political refugee.

You’re not visiting aunt Edna in Smithville.

Correct.

Jesus Christ did go back though.

That’s one way to look at it.

Kind of like thinking prison is a “staycation.”

We could have a "Jesus wasn't in favor of drag story hour" and the usual suspects would be in to claim he would. Sheesh.

In a vacuum, I would agree with you, and I would’ve use that term. But using the “Jesus“ spelling just made a much better parallel to “Jesus Gonzalez“ in the same post.

The problem with these commercials is not that they describe Jesus bar Yusef as a political refugee.

The problem is that they fail to disclose that Jesus Gonzalez probably is not.
Just gave the whole thing a bit of rhetorical flourish.

I'm all about the flourish.

National identity and borders weren’t understood in the time of the Romans like they are today. So the comparison is both anachronistic and silly.

I’m cool with letting in good, hard working families with Christian values…. But, they gotta speak English or at least aspire to assimilate. All successful immigrant groups have assimilated and become part of the population. So far Latinos haven’t really done that given the Mexico flags everywhere

I think it was in an earlier thread a few days ago, but yes.

The concept of "immigration" (with border checkpoints and the like) did not really exist for individuals. The Romans certainly DID use border troops to prevent large-scale MIGRATIONS of entire PEOPLES into their territories, but they mostly did not care if a few families moved around.

But you can be DAMNED sure that they were not going to tolerate some little Hasmodean tinpot ruler of Judea chasing anyone into the Roman province of Egypt, capturing them, and dragging them back to Judea. That would be seen as a direct challenge to Roman sovereignty on its own territory. Might have been the last thing that said tinpot dictator ever did.

There are TONS of instances TODAY of citizens who flee their native land to escape persecution by a dictator ... but then return home when the dictator dies or is deposed.

Jesus' situation was MUCH more like that, than like a six-month visit to Aunt Miriam's house over in Hoboken.

Make no mistake, the actions of Herod the Great were those of a dictator. Herod Archelaus, too, which is why the family returned from Egypt and went to Nazareth (in Antipas' territory) rather than to Bethlehem (in Archelaus' territory).
