The vacuum right now for the LA GOP is the worst I've seen in years.
The LA GOP is a joke.
To be fair, the LA DEM is an even bigger joke. They did everything they could to dissuade JBE from even running for governor. The two in-term open races (treasurer, sec of state) they have not been involved, at all).
If it wasn't for JBE's ego, they would have no statewide elected politicians and nothing even close.
Maybe that's LA GOP's problem... they haven't been really challenged.

Why couldn't Vitter run?

I hope so. We need a North LA baw in the mansion for a damn change.

If JBE is so bad, why aren’t the big name Republicans doing something to stop him?
Could it be he’s not really as bad as I’ve read here?
Sentrius speaks some truth but he lays it on thick. The average Louisianaian thinks they are doing fine. They don't know any better / any different.
We have insanely low standards here in LA. Most of the people have never left the state and don't think we can do any better.
And the GOP has no bench. Most of our US reps are pretty new at their jobs or are like Scalise and too high up to leave. Our Lt Gov, and the other statewide offices, none of them inspire confidence in running for governor. Our state house of rep is mostly partisan hacks who either don't want to actually cut spending, or are incapable of being likeable enough to win statewide office.
Our only shot might be someone like Hewitt, who isn't ready for prime time, but she might have to just go for it anyways. Sometimes, you have to play the true freshman. But... given JBE's approval numbers, why shoot your wad now?

Graves - my worry is he is another Jindal. Smart, savvy, but is he really committed? And will he actually fix problems or just paper them over?
Actually he has been a workhorse in the House delivering a shocking amount of excellent substantial policy victories in the short time he has been there (eg duplicated benefits issue for disaster help)
I think his biggest weakness is no college degree an the college he didn't finish was Alabama. The lack of college degree would be less of an issue if he were some CEO of a large business he built from the ground up.

He has pretty good approval numbers, but if you look closer you see it isn't that deep. He gets the majority of his support in the "approve" versus "strongly approve" category.

Right. And a solid, big-name GOPer would be able to beat him despite his poll numbers.
But can an average, unknown GOPer do it?

Wait, you don't think the Republican party runs the show, do you?
They do not. In all honesty, no one does.

Hot take there =)
By no means is it a done deal that JBE will be re-elected. Far from it. But at the same time, anyone who is being honest will have to admit that as of this morning, he has a shot at being re-elected, a shot that probably got a little better this morning.

The next Governor will be in charge of redistricting after the 2020 census comes out. Do you want a Democrat or a Republican in charge of redistricting?

What about Dr. Craig Green for governor? He’s currently the public service commissioner for central district, I believe. He’s smart, former LSU football player... and a good dude.

I actually called it after his election. I thought that JBE would be reelected. Powerful governorship=lots of support from the political class, PLUS he was elected during an oil slump = an improving economy even if he did nothing; he just had to wait.
That is a tough combo. I thought Kennedy might win because he had been doing the work and setting the tone.
Now? Who the hell knows. In the long term this might be a good thing for Republicans but right now, I gotta think JBE has a little extra pep in his step.
La politics...never boring

What?
The only reason Edwards' currently occupies the 4th Floor is because Vitter, Angelle, and Dardenne decided to sling mud in the jungle primary while JBE sat back and watched...then he turned it against Vitter by getting the "moderate" support from Dardenne and enough of the "evangelicals" who didn't want to vote for an adulterer.

Weren't you one of those alleged republicans for JBE constantly claiming that he would be a one termer?
I don't remember if I said that exactly but it's possible. All I know is that I vehemently liked him more than Vitter.
But you know what? He honestly should have been a one termer. The LA republicans had plenty of time to start working on someone but they just fricked it all up.
Senator to Governor is a humongous step backwards. If the LAGOP was hanging hopes on Kennedy running, it was stupid. As a US Senator, he can walk through Louisiana right now and the position just drips of more power than Governor.
Landry is a blowhard. Rispone is too old to wade into politics.
We need a "republicanish Beto", if there's such a thing.

Waguespack would be the choice here but he's needs another cycle or two to distance himself from Jindal.
