I don't think he is a moron necessarily. I think he knows he can be liable for someone being shot if he asked them to protect the property so he is trying to not provide answers that could implicate him. He's not good at it though because he is just coming across as evasive.

I mentioned it earlier, but I'm thinking he just buys and sells at the auction and that is the title they hung on him.
