THIS!!! Make it make sense to me…. In the grand scheme of things I know I’m much better of then most. It I see the above situation and just wonder…. I know these people can’t make That much more than me… but every weekend they are spending $100s on gas and party favors and eating out, and $200 gold rounds, every weekend. I’m here talking my kids to wait until next week when I get paid to go buy cleats for football….SMH
I would bet you underestimate what some people make and then some people are probably in debt pretty bad to live a certain life style.
I sell toilet paper and my wife is in HR so most people would probably think we make between 180k to 220k combined and are trying to figure out how we have what we have house and car wise.

1 night of pizza for 4 people is $40-$50. Add a few drinks and you are at $50-$60.

oh ok, just toss that in, like it is not one of the most expensive financial choices one can make. Sorry if you live in BR or NOLA, sucks...

People are reeeally out of touch with reality if $150-200k doesn’t feel upper middle class in Louisiana. I get that this range doesn’t go as far as it feels like it should, but 3/4 of households in this state make less than that.
If it feels tight at $150k, I can only imagine what it must feel like to have a true middle class income. We’re around $175 with 2 kids (1 in private), but our cars are paid for, mortgage is low because we’ve stayed in our 3 BR house vs. upgrading, etc. Car insurance is dumb since we have a teenage driver with her own new car, but it’s fine. We don’t carefully budget, but we’re able to save a decent amount each month and wouldn’t have any problems if we suddenly needed a new roof or major repair. We are far from wealthy, but we are easily comfortable.
I can see how quickly we’d feel uncomfortable if we started adding a couple of $800 car notes or a more expensive house, so we try not to let our lifestyle creep up as income increases.

I can tell you that 300,000$ + combined doesn't go as far as you think.
It can apparently afford for more cars than people.
As well as afford to still pay for two adults that have moved out of the house.
And a bunch of other needs.
Paying for college and 2 adults to go to college. AND live in apartments instead of dorms AND pay their food and sorority dues.
AND 4 cars for 5 people sounds like upper class

How much are these private schools?
I ask because I don't have to worry about them, but my property tax is ~1k/month, so it's not like I totally escape the cost of good schools.

Dude I know trust me, I have 3 kids in private.
You have a spending problem, sorry that bosses you off. It you are a single male with 200k job….how in the frick are you struggling.
You act like you don’t have a spending problem yet are in the top 5% of earners…how in the frick do you think the other 95% make it?

For a "standard" private school you're looking at roughly $800/mo per kid.

I get it if he lives in New Orleans. If you want to live in a "safe" neighborhood you're looking at a minimum of probably 600k for a single family house, depending upon his interest rate that in itself can take up a large chunk of take home pay.
It's a completely different situation compared to someone who lives in an area of the state where he could get a similar house for ~300k.

Yeah, we make around $190-200k. We live a comfortable lifestyle but our expenses are pretty reasonable. Our house is fairly modest relative to income. We made a good bit less when we bought it.
We have 1 vehicle payment of $450/mo. I drive a 7 yr old paid off truck that I have no intention of replacing anytime soon.
I prefer keeping our expenses pretty low. I don't like being in a lot of debt. Our biggest monthly expense is retirement savings.

family combined income of 150K+ in Arkansas and I feel like I'm doing much better than most around me
Idk where you're at in LA, but my dad's side of the family is dirt poor in grant parrish. I could only imagine the type of 5th wheels I could live in making 130k a year down there

Groceries/household supplies - $1500

Spending $2500/mo on food seems a bit excessive for a middle-class family
Seems cheap, 4 person household spending $375 a week on groceries?
I buy for one and $100 doesnt get you shite anymore.

We don't spend anywhere close to $750 every 2 weeks on groceries for 2 adults and a teenager, and definitely nowhere close to 1k/mo eating out.
Do y'all buy everything at Whole Foods?

Then move out of Nola to Kenner
And if you live in a 600k house, even in Nola, you are not middle class, period

These guys are dumbasses and blow money like crazy and then claim they are middle class and live pay check to paycheck

I’m not saying he’s middle class, I’m just saying that he can make 200k, and still live paycheck to paycheck without necessarily having a “spending problem”. Real estate is just flat out more expensive in some cities.
ETA: in one post you say you know what it costs to live in New Orleans and send your kids to private school, and in the next post you say he should move to Kenner. That’s moving the goal posts

I'm shocked at what people spend on food. We might spend $200/mo eating out most months, and maybe $700-800 or so at the grocery store.
We buy stuff from Rouses, Fresh Market, some Walmart, local produce stand. I can go to Costco and buy all of our household goods (TP, dish detergent, trash bags etc) for like $150 and that'll last 3-4 months.
