Seems they finally realized it’s a tax deduction. The problem? They have been pocketing their cash tips and not claiming the income. Credit card tips are easily tracked by an employer. Its hitting them that they have to be honest with the IRS now and they are screwed.
You didn’t think this through did you

Who cares if it's reported since it's non taxable?
I still think its stupid to give a tax exemption to people who make a majority of their income off tips. But now hopefully those people will accurately report their cash tip income since they won’t get taxed anyway and it gets people off government handouts that they shouldn’t have qualified for if they were reporing their incomd accurately.

Why would the way they report their tips change?

This isn't going to affect the average server at all. What it will affect are the people that get big ticket tips paid by credit card, and they won't even feel it until tax time. It's not like the average Hooters waitress is making $100K anyway where $10K in tips is really going to move thr needle tax wise.

I don't know why people didn't pick up on the real goal of "no tax on tips" was to pull a gray market of labor revenue fully above board and taxable.
Actually, this was only a minor secondary goal. The primary goal was to turn younger service industry workers into Republican voters. Historically, these people either did not vote, or voted Democrat.

I don’t know anyone that pays cash that is younger than maybe 65. Younger generation 14-40 sure as shite don’t.
Cash was 14% in 2019. I’m gonna take a wild leap and guess it’s half that now, like 10% cash vs 90% electronic/card.

Why would you start reporting cash tips

Not really.
They can continue their dishonest practice, but it's a reward for servers who do it the right way.

Easiest thing is to go to the system the entire rest of the world uses. The restaurant actually plays a real wage to the servers and tips are a no is you may choose to give. Plain and simple.
Tipping in the US is a joke given that if you give 15% you are looked down upon as if you are forcing them to work there and short changing them.
Let them earn their salaries and let restaurants deal with their performance and it force patrons to make up the costs.

They can still pocket cash tips.
I only tip with cash, period, for this very reason. I live in a rural area dotted with tiny towns and a LOT of my friends wives are restaurant waitresses and most of their income is from tips. I know they have to report that shite when you tip with a card, so I tip in cash and I usually tip very generously even if the waitress just does an "okay" job.
They work their asses off. They deal with incredibly rude customers (something I'm incapable of without getting physical) and in this area there aren't many other options for them to make money outside of cooking and selling meth.
