Here's a question.
If you asked 100 average 12th graders in your home town:
"What was the Six Day War?"
How many of them would know the answer?
Some wacky number of high schoolers couldn't place the American Civil War within 50 years.

Stupid answers to silly questions was my favorite.
Guy is lying on the side of the road after a crash.
Passerby stopping: "Have a wreck?"
Answer: "No thanks. I just had one."

Anyone have neighbors that installed a bomb shelter?
Yep, my neighbor was the small town MD. He had one built in his back yard. They wouldn't let us go in.
I was a kid in the 60s, graduated HS in '74. I remember "duck and cover" drills. I remember we talked about how close major targets (AF bases and St. Louis' McDonnel Douglas) were nearby.
I had a customer (ret. AF colonel) tell me flew SR-71 Blackbird missions over the USSR. He said after the Cold War was over, he visited the sites that he photographed which was surreal. (He also bombed Hanoi in a B-52).

Nah. Didn't happen.
Yes, you liberal idiot, it did happen.
Ronald Reagan did not win the Cold War without firing a shot. That is ludicrous. The Soviet Union didn't spring forth on the day he was inaugurated. Please try and act rational.
The Soviet Union began dying the day it was born.

It wasn't just the 60's.
Hell, I remember the "nuclear duck and cover" drills we ran in class in the 1980's.
Get under that desk!
I mean when the movie "The Day After" came out; everyone freaked and we had nuclear safety drills.
Then we had Red Dawn...shite got real.
They were coming any day now.

That was boring stuff. We got a film (on one of those old reel-to-reel projectors) about how to survive in the bomb shelter. It was 9th grade boys PE and the coach made us sit down on the gym floor.
It was about preserving water in the underground shelter. Then personal hygiene came up. They showed a 40 year old woman take her clothes off and wash her pussy. That's when coach shut the film off and said "Uh, I think this was supposed to go to the girls gym class. Sorry."
That shite made me laugh.

I've actually seen Jess Watters in his street interviews ask people when the War of 1812 took place. Their answers were comical. You would not believe the number of idiots roaming our streets.

If I shot you dead today some people would say "Zach killed Whiskey Papa." But you could say "Whiskey Papa began dying the day he was born."

I remember it being very cold...and warlike.

I was late Cold War...born in '79 so I was only 12 when they folded up at the end of '91. I don't remember doing drills and things in school, or even watching the duck and cover stuff. I do remember my father watching the nightly news and hearing about the Soviets and realized the possibility of nuclear war but never was too concerned about it.
I did enjoy listening to my dad's old shortwave. It was an old bastard with vacuum tubes and all but we would listen to Radio Moscow, East German Radio, and Voice of America. It was all very interesting. I remember watching "The Day After" on television. I also remember my grandparents telling me about how everyone was convinced in the 50's there would be an "atomic war" and how scary the Cuban Missile Crisis was in '62.

I recall a great deal of Eastern Europeans willing to die to get away from Russian Communism (and a lot of them being killed).
My uncle watched Russia roll in to Czechoslovakia in 1968, whatever it was. The U.S. Army watched from afar.

I remember talking to the parents of one of my wife's friends, who immigrated to Australia in 1981 from Bulgaria. Her father had a real thick accent and I remember him saying "I love Australia! It's freedom! I have house. I have job. frick the Communists!" I really liked that dude.

Reagan and Company bankrupted their arse on a stone cold bluff.
Stars Wars never existed. It was a bluff. The Soviets literally bankrupted trying to keep up.
Speaking of keeping up. You should try to.

The Russians were in bad societal and economic shape when Reagan took office. It is absurd to say it was not on its last legs or that he did much to hasten it.

When I read contemporary articles about life in the 50s and 60s with the threat of nuclear destruction I can't relate to this narrative that we were scared to death of the world ending. What I remember:
1. The Russians had spies. We had spies. It seemed fair to me.
2. My mom was scared during the Cuban missile crisis. Dad, Bro and I were not. We said, 'Mom, I don't think New Iberia is a target for the Russians. Relax and make us a sammich.'
3. The Russians claimed that they invented everything. Except baseball.

Yep, ther Leonard family. They owned the local A&W franchise.I never got to see the inside of the shelter, unfortunately.

there were a lot of bomb shelters. It is rare to find them nowadays. Just safe rooms.

That would have been a fascinating experience. I'm personally intrigued by Cold War-era Civil Defense guidelines and infrastructure, especially since I wasn't around during that era.
