Who is the only major party candidate to lose a general election for federal office in all 50 states?

No takers on this one?

The answer is Walter Mondale. He famously lost every state but his home state of Minnesota to Reagan in 1984. Then, in 2002, when he replaced the deceased Paul Wellstone on the Minnesota ballot for the Senate, he lost to Republican Norm Coleman.

Was going to guess Mondale but thought it might be wrong. I was like, surely at least one dem leaning state voted for him.

His favorite lunch. Not sure about the martini, but I’d heard about the cottage cheese.

Nixon liked ketchup instead of A1.

They got Agnew on tax evasion but that was an offshoot of the investigation of his taking bribes as a Maryland County Executive prior to being Governor of MD.

Ford was a stand-up guy

Nixon, although a career politician, was an outsider. He wasn't Republican royalty. His parents owned a corner grocery, not a chain.

There were enemies inside and outside the party that were out to get him.

The 73'-75 Senate was 57 Dem/ 43 Rep

The 73'-75 House was 243 Dem/ 192 Rep

Ford is who you would get if Pelosi and Schumer picked the president.

Oh they cheated all right - but sometimes it was just not enough - places like Chicago and Philadelphia have always been famous for their full utilization of the "registration rolls" on election night.

What was different in 2020 was the automation of the cheat - all with the blessings of the Democrat party by expanding mail-in 'voting' and playing around with (ignoring) chain-of-custody requirement, not to mention expanding the time for 'counting the results' by days and weeks.

That plus the dedicated attack on reasonable identification procedures has just opened the door to massive cheating.

Until the Democrat party develops some sort of morality and integrity standards the cheating factor will have to be combated every year - these people have only one driving motive - crush anyone who disagrees and force them out of the public square.

Their leadership fits any definition of basic evil. Their voter base is either just as evil or irresponsibly stupid.

I didn’t remember about the VP. I guess he took Agnew’s spot, but I was just a child then.

The end of the Simpson’s episode where Homer goes to war with HW Bush always makes me laugh, because Ford move into the place and him and Homer get along fantastic.

He was the first ex president to really monetize the speaking tours after his presidency.

A great read is Write It When I'm Gone: Remarkable Off-the-Record Conversations with Gerald R. Ford

I would guess that was a big part of the calculus behind him being the choice.

Nixon was already circling the drain, even if in a very wide arc. The Dem majorities effectively had veto power over whoever replaced Agnew, and they were not going to confirm a candidate that had a strong chance to win “re-election” in 1976.

The West Wing had a very similar story arc at one point, and this was an overt gambit in it.

The last time that the U.S. did not have a Vice President was the week between Ford taking the office of the President and his naming Nelson Rockefeller as his V.P.

Harry Truman served his first term as President without a V.P. because he thought that the office should only be filled by election and not by appointment.

He did carry his home state on Minnesota in the presidential...but then lost the Minnesota race for the Senate several years later.
