For an inexperienced individual looking for home defense, I’d recommend a shotgun (I prefer Remington but many good options) with buckshot. At 2 AM in the dark you want to able to point it in the intruders general direction and feel confident you’ll connect,
But I mean you still have to aim pretty good. Buckshot doesn't have that big of a spread at 30 ft. You're only talking about a few inches at most.

Any type of shotgun. Easiest to use and the least amount of upkeep required.

Birdshot first home defense will get you killed

It depends on the situation. It's just like in that Chapelle skit. You follow up birdshot with a slug. 9 times out of 10 if someone is in your home they're looking to grab shite and get out. In order for someone to walk through birdshot they are going to have to be extremely determined to actually kill you for whatever reason.

I mean, I guess you can just shoot to kill right away, but I would rather pepper someone, tell them I have a slug in the chamber and tell them to sit their arse down until the cops arrive. This way I don't have to have a death on my conscience.

I don't make enemies and I don't keep enemies. So there is almost zero chance at all anyone is ever going to come into my home looking to kill me. I think my method would work fine if it ever came down to it.

I would probably change it up though if I kept enemies or lived near a high crime area.

I would buy a pistol 45, a shotgun 12 ga. And an AR-15 if you are buying guns for protection.

Sure, but you still have better odds than a novice shooting a pistol. And the alternative is birdshot which isn’t going to neutralize the threat and you’re betting on a wounded invader fleeing.

It’s highly unlikely you’ll ever be firing a weapon in your home at a target 30 feet away unless you have a very unusual layout. Our home is 3700 square feet and 30 feet is about the absolute maximum clear sight line distance between any entry point and any area inside the house.

The vast majority home defense shootings occur within 10 feet, most commonly immediately near an exterior entry point, stairwell or entry way into a room that the shooter is already in.

Find someone who knows how to operate firearms ASAP and have them teach you how to employ whatever weapon you buy. A lot of people advocate for a shotgun for home defense. It has it's benefits, but I'd prefer an AR platform.

METTTC dependent is a cop out answer, but it fits here.

Buy more than one and buy lots of ammo. Buy commonly used calibers.

Hollywood perpetrated the “ just point at the general direction and shoot” myth, it really gets old. At the distance to target likely to be encountered in s home defense situation any shotgun no matter how short the barrel should be treated the same as a rifle. No shortage of YouTube videos demonstrating this.

Here is a great video by an expert that would be good for all first time gun owners:

Get an ar-15, get a red dot, zero at 50/200 yards, leave the red dot on (decent red dot the battery will last for 3-5 years constantly on). The bullet is gonna go where the dot is (or near enough it's not going to matter). Any number of 9mm pistol will do very well. Someone else mentioned the cz scorpion. That sort of "braced pistol" would also be a good choice, loaded with hollow points if over penetration is a concern. Good ol pump shotgun, or one of the saiga semi auto clones would do the trick as well
