Which was exactly my point. There are no barriers to movement on the North European Plain, so invasions have flowed in both directions. There is no way for anyone to set a defensive perimeter, so everyone keeps pushing back and forth until they feel that they have either a decent defensive position or at least a buffer. The only way for Russia to feel even reasonably secure is to secure the Polish and Bessarabian Gaps, which; unfortunately, are on the other side of Ukraine. Even securing those leave the Baltic coast exposed. As Katherine the Great said, "the only way for Russia to secure its borders is to expand them." We keep coming up with modern explanations for a centuries-old problem. As I stated before, Russia will keep fighting for a stronger defensive position until they're no longer capable.

The link you posted replying to my assertion that "NATO never promised that" confirms what I said.
Individual politicians speaking for their governments do not equal "NATO" announcing a policy.

Now do all of the invasions committed by Russia since 1945.

I've been posting this for years:
2024:
2024:
quote:
No, it was because NATO, led by the Obama Administration and Hilary Clinton orchestrated the overthrow the legitimately elected government of the Ukraine in 2013 in order to appease EU oil and gas providers and the illegitimate puppet government that was installed threatened Russia’s Naval Base as Savastapol.
All of this has been clearly documented and reported on around the world but US news outlets refused to report and simply went with the “Russians are bad” narrative.
But it’s cool because the Clintons made upwards of 25 million in kickbacks from Ukraine Oligarchs on the deal.

True, but still smacks of saying something with your fingers crossed behind your back.
Should we hold those assurances up as de facto treaties? Of course not.
Nor, however, should we clutch our pearls when we completely and egregiously throw Russian objections and concerns out the window by putting a military alliance on their borders whose charter purpose was opposing Moscow.
These are not black and white issues.
