Because they are a fearful people. Masks have allowed them to outwardly show their fear. They have turned fear into a virtue, and the more fearful they are the more virtuous they are.

Masks are a physical manifestation of virtue. They're a tangible object that they can use to label a person's entire existence. Those wearing masks are beautiful souls, those not wearing should die.
And note the conspicuous lack of similar sky screaming about hand washing and disinfecting. See, you can't immediately look upon a person physically and judge them and doxx them based on hand washing habits....you simply can't tell. Hence their up and declaring that surface spread suddenly isn't an issue any longer. Oh but that mask stuff, still in business with that.

THIS. And it goes way back. I read a piece about why the USSR economy failed. Think of the DMV or any other govt workers. They have no incentive to be efficient. If they lose money they get more funding. If they save money they lose funding.
It's the exact opposite of private business. So, the USSR ran every single business like the DMV.
That's what happens when govt has total control. And historically, govt always tries to grow it's control over individuals. To make things equal.

Masks help impede the spread. The better question is why does the right oppose public health measures?
