You are on the right track. We should all be shoppers of healthcare services. Our system is screwed because of too much socialized medicine already. The main reason healthcare cost increase greater than inflation is because of reimbursement rates of medicare. Providers CANNOT charge an insurance company or anyone else LESS than they medicare. The medicare reimbursement rate becomes the floor for pricing and they are ever raising it after pressure from healthcare lobbyist.
We need to move to a subscription based medicare system where medicare folks are given vouchers to subscribed to healthcare provider networks AND they get to keep any savings they have from shopping. (The IB healthcare solution posted here many times)
This will fundamentally change the pricing model of healthcare for the better. Like in your example of the "Fix broken limbs $65" we would be able to buy all our healthcare for $500 a month or whatever and would have cash incentives to shop. It would make shoppers out of all of us and it would get the government out of the healthcare pricing business.

How much do Americans currently spend on health insurance premiums?
This. No one is suggesting that premiums wouldn’t be paid. The only people looking at it this way are right wingers who want to misrepresent the situation. If premiums are paid into the system, as they are paid into the insurance system now, then overall savings is possible.

I just like how the government can manage kids crossing a border yet, the Libs want them to manage their healthcare.

That’s a terrible plan

You’ve obviously never had to appeal a healthcare decision. If you have the random good fortune to have a special needs child you will learn about private healthcare rationing.

Anybody pushing single payer is a fricking moron

The debate really boils down how you want to ration your healthcare:
Private contract versus Public bureaucracy

We currently spend more per capita than any other country in the world
So if we adopted another country's system verbatim it wouldn't be likely to cost anymore than it does now

How much of the spending is in technology?
For instance, other than Japan, we have the most MRI machines per capita at 35. The next closest country is Austria with 19.

Most recent study has it costing 3.2 trillion, around 85% of current federal expenditures
But all you need is political “will”.....right?
How THE frick are we going to pay for such a massive expansion?
Be a bargain compared to what we currently pay.....and would eliminate about 90% of the cost of business liability, homeowners, auto insurance and workers comp.....and make litigation involving health care costs almost non-existent. But what we ought to do is repeal the ACA and revert to our previous system.....and wonder why we can’t compete with other nations in making shite. That worked MARVELOUSLY!

I'm sure we're all shocked you didn't link it.
How much would it compare to what is currently spent in the nation on healthcare?

We won't be able to without taxing the middle class. These Sanders supporters honestly believe they can accomplish it by just taxing the rich. They want to model it after these "socialist" Utopias in Scandinavia, but don't want to tax themselves(just like Scandinavians do) to get there.

The single payer argument is so stupid.
All of the costs that have been thrown out in this thread hasn’t counted the new federal agancy that would have to be larger than the social security administration. How much are those new service centers going to cost?
What about this new agency that will be full of Felicias and Bernices. How many new govt employees are we talking about? How much is that going to cost?
The post office.. crap with crap service.. loses money.
Social security... been looted for cash.. stated to be insolvent in our lifetime.
Medicaid... has people on it that actually have private health coverage but they want to use Medicaid so there is no deductible. And they can’t catch that.
The DMV. Don’t have to explain.
The VA. Remember those stories?? The government can not run health care for veterans. How they going to do it for everyone?
And we going to make everybody pay into single payer? Hell no. Votes have to be bought. That means more of the burden is on the middle class... as usual.

There is one problem with healthcare costs in the US that no plan other than the ACA has ever tried to address....and it is the reason our premiums are so high. Anyone who is adequately insured is footing the bill for the uninsured and the underinsured. If your premiums have gone up post ACA it’s because you were under insured and those of us whose premiums have stayed the same have been subsidizing you for years. Your welcome, by the way.
I know that all of you will say this is bullshite but you can’t explain the number of collection agencies in the US and claim that any insurance is adequate. Y’all weren’t paying what your care cost.....and those of us who were were also paying for collection efforts. There is no difference in not paying for healthcare than stealing a t shirt at Walmart. For every shirt stolen the paying customer pays more.....healthcare is exactly the same....paying customers are always going to pick up the slack for non- paying customers or customers who do not pay in full.
No one and no plan addresses this. We allow insurance companies to collect premiums for policies that don’t approach paying what the patients care costs, their co- pays don’t cover the difference and the only person left to pick up the slack is the customer who is adequately insured. Y’all can feel high and mighty about not liking the federal government telling people they have to pay for their own healthcare.....but the costs are going to paid by someone....either the patient or the rest of us....there ain’t no free lunch.
