No

There's isn't a reasonable American that wants P.R. to become a state.

Financially it would make more sense for them to be a state and close the loopholes people and businesses exploit to avoid federal taxes. But from a practical sense it's a bad idea because it could swing that balance of power thats already pretty narrow.

No. Puerto Rico should be its own country.

Personally, I don't because it seems like a foreign country to me that needs to be on it's own. I don't want to take on the headaches of assimilation and costs.

Just to bring their infrastructure up to American standards would cost billions that PR can't afford.

As i stated earlier, the cost to upgrade their entire infrastructure to US health and safety standards would either bankrupt the island or cost US taxpayers trillions. (i say either, because i dont' know who would bear the cost).

We (taxpayers) and private companies (eg Luma) are on the hook for it no matter what. They're not going to get cut loose on their own. Status quo is basically that they are a net consumer and tax shelter for corporations and the wealthy. Thats not going to change unless we remove their ability to completely self govern and get rid of some of the corruption.

No.

Hell, I don't even think Puerto Rico wants to be a state.

The only time they want to be American is when it is most convenient for them, like when a hurricane slams their arse and they need the federal pesos.

No, I don't want them as a state.

And most of the knowledgeable Puerto Ricans don't want to be a state either...their taxes will go up since they (mostly) don't pay US federal income tax. They do pay SS, Medicare and a few others.

The only reason we don’t give it back to Spain is US bioscience companies are making a killing being based there. Lobbying and graft with our esteemed representatives keep raking in the cash. If it became a state, the corps would go from the present 4% corporate tax rate to a 21% US corporate tax rate.
Add to it, as a US territory, no tariffs.

As always, follow the money.

Then throw in all the Act 22 citizens who "moved" there to not pay any taxes.

When my son was in the Marines at Gitmo they got a vacation weekend to Puerto Rico. He said the beaches and topography were great. The big problem was Puerto Ricans.
