You can't judge Starbucks by places like Chicago or other big cities. I've gone to SB in Shreveport-Bossier about 10,000 times over 30 years and have commiserated with at least 1,000 barristas. About 90% are young people from this area which is very different from giant urban areas.
About 80% are females under 25. The average time of employment is 6 months. They move on after graduating college and move away due to a better job offer for them or their new spouse.
They have a rule not to bring up politics. But when they get to know you they will engage in polite discussion. They're just nice kids. When a sudden storm hit in December while inside I said 'My car is far from the door. Looks like I'm gonna get wet today.' A barrista said: 'Hold on' and went to the lost and found room and gave me an umbrella saying ' This has been here for over a year. Merry Christmas.'
