This is the result of woke editors and purposely hiring writers who are more woke. They are focusing on what they think they would like to read if they were a gay/trans/what-the-frick-ever kid instead of saying "this (straight young males ~10-24) is our largest demographic, the demographic which caused this industry to succeed in the first place, let's continue to write to them".
Aside from a few instances (like AvX) it's like day vs night to read something like Claremont's run on the XMen versus any X-book from ~2000 onward. Same with Ditko's, or even McFarlane's Spiderman, Byrne's Fantastic Four, Jurgen's Superman, O'Neil's Batman, etc. You could even put Stan's writing in there (especially the early FF stuff).
They wrote to a larger, less defined-by-whatever-category audience with the object to tell good stories, not just stories that they considered good because primarily they were specifically about LGBTQ2A++-whatever.
Since 1997 unit sales have dropped by ~25% (Diamond reporting top 300 comic book unit sales from each year). This represents ~25M books not being sold. Part of this is shitty writing, part is vastly increased prices (current comic book price is around $4 per comic). The things saving Marvel and DC right now is their tv shows and movies.
This is a big chunk of why manga has been able to gain such a foothold in the US. There is such a wide array of writers writing everything from ultra-woke to frick-your-woke that there's something for everyone and you don't find them scrambling en masse to apologize for their characters and/or stories.

They actually explained this well in the Superman and Lois series where one of their sons doesn't start getting his powers until puberty and the other doesn't get them at all.
