Which might beg the question: if we're getting screwed this bad and have been for so long then how do we manage to have by far the world's largest economy?
Same way Bama went to two NC games with Jalen Hurts as QB, more talent and resources. But they had to change things up to win it all. Was it a risk? Was staying with Hurts the safe play? No. So there was more risk in maintaining the status quo so Saban made the move. Of course he's praised because it worked, but had it not...it still would've been the right move. Same here. And if our economy thrives, so will those of our trade partners.
I think there is more risk in staying put than in trying to reset the table just a little.

Do you not think from a big picture view it is better for the US to have things like manufacturing in this country?
Of course I think we should have manufacturing. My livelihood is closely tied to such industries.
These tactics didn't work when Obama did them and he was rightly criticized for it. Why is it taboo to critique it now?

Tariffs are taxes
So long as they are done by GEOTUS, they are manna from heaven.

There isn't any evidence to support that claim at the moment

Why aren’t the anti tax people getting excited about this?
Because they're not. They're a way to protect the standard of living in a first world country from predation by slave labor in the third world.

And just like social safety nets can cripple an individual more than they help by creating dependency so can these policies stifle innovation which is what we really need to compete long term.

Giving away our economy is treason.
Treason>taxes
We lost the trade war decades ago, Trump is trying to slow the leak
Eta: why do you hate American manufacturing jobs for millions of Americans?

What would be considered succeeding or failing?

that's probably a question to be asked of the person willing to tax american businesses and consumers for some end
and in lieu of that, people who support said taxation

we tax all kinds of stuff with high elasticities, the statement about assuming inelastic is nonsensical
If they have high elasticity, how does price affect them? If the assumption is that higher tarriffs lead to higher taxes paid by consumers, the assumption must be made that the goods will be purchased no matter what, implying price inelasticity.
If higher tarriffs didn’t lead to higher taxes, that means that the goods wouldn’t be purchased, thereby implying that they are price elastic.
Not sure why that is considered nonsensical to you.
Also consider the side effects of tarriffs, such as possibly higher domestic production and the jobs that result from it. Money stays in the US and has a multiplier effect rather than leaving the country and contributing to trade deficits.

nope
if not driven by the willingness to just not buy a thing, high elasticity must be by definition driven by availability of substitutes
if a tariff results in a buyer shifting to their not-first choice, it makes them worse off. just like it is for any tax that isn't even-handed
saying that you must assume inelasticity for a tariff to be a tax is nonsensical, full stop

The evidence is there. The world is changing the way they trade with the USA because they have to have our purchase power.
