I mean this is just factually inaccurate. The problem is the houses you're talking about are being quickly snatched up by investors and rented out and/or renovated and sold for a much higher price.
Not really.
Right now, I'm looking at a 840 sq. ft. house on Zillow in Southdowns BR for $275k that's been listed for at least 3 months.
I bought my first house in 1998 for $85k, it was 840 sq. ft. near Southdowns. This was after starting my first job in 1990 at $18k per year.

You assume everyone has access to a private vehicle.
quote:Ok. See above.
Public transportation is basically nonexistent or extremely limited in suburbs.
quote:Same way I do. Hooptie. I drive 67 miles one way in a 2011 ford fiesta sedan with 280K miles.
How are people supposed to get from their cheap housing to the city where the job is?

You’re making this whole thing about you. “I was able to do things because of the access and privileges I had so every single other person on earth can do the same thing I did regardless of their access and privileges.”
Egomaniac.

Cool? Not really instructive with respect to the trend you brought up, but okay.

You should do the same with respect to the reality of everything else.

You already said you WANT to live there. So yeah, I don’t expect you to complain about living where you want to live. Do you expect a party? Jeez.

so...
1975 = 3.22 x household income
2025 = 5.25 x household income
Now factor in both parents work bc wages didnt track with inflation.
1975 = 3.22 x household income + $0 childcare
2025 = 5.25 x household income + $800/month childcare
Now factor in inflated car payments: $4,971 vs $48,641 avg car price
1975 = 3.22 x household income + $0 childcare + 36% household income
2025 = 5.25 x household income + $800/month childcare + 64% household income (x2 bc mommy has to work now)
Now factor in student loans, $3,680 vs $38,270 annual tuition
1975 = 3.22 x household income + $0 childcare + 36% household income + 30% household income
2025 = 5.25 x household income + $800/month childcare + 64% household income (x2 bc mommy has to work now) + 50% household income (x2 bc mommy has to work now)
Life is more expensive now, get over it.
Quit shitting on the new generation and just be glad you lived in a time where you werent saddled with crazy debt while starting your life.

I bought my current house in Jan 2021. As soon as the Dems won the Senate run offs, I knew inflation was coming and made an offer and locked in a sub 3% rate that week.
Even with a low mortgage payment locked in, the increase of home owners insurance and property taxes in the Biden years were brutal. The inflation on the escrow items was enough to have made an additional payment toward the principle each year. Making that extra payment each year would allow you to pay off a 30 year mortgage in 25 years. Bidenomics will be kicking our asses years after that senile old crook has croaked.

How do they get to work now?
When I was 16 without a car, I walked to work but I was lucky enough to live close to my job. Not everyone does.

Someone who lives in a rural area because that’s the only place their parents can afford to live? I doubt it. Where would they work?

Save what money? How can they earn money if they live in a rural area without public transportation?

Saw a video showing that home prices have gone up 47% since 2020. That is not sustainable for anyone.
In the 5 years from 1977 to 1982 inflation was 59.2% - not just home prices, but average price for everything. Is that any more or less sustainable?
Home prices may have outpaced inflation over the last 20 years, but inflation has been historically low during that period.

By "we" do you mean the government? Isn't government interference in the housing market part of the problem we're experiencing today?

You guys keep bitching. Put up or shut up. What is your age and your household income? If you are sub 30 and bitching about not being able to afford a 500K house GTFO.

Who is bitching? We’re having a discussion about an important political issue.
I already own a home.

This isn't a political issue though. It's a finanical one.
