Prior to the ‘80’s, I’d see a hobo or two during the week in Birmingham. After they stopped involuntary commits, it wasn’t a year and they were under most of the over passes and walking around.
Involuntary commitments were never stopped in Alabama.
In fact in 2002, Alabama expanded the criteria for civil commitment to include living in squalor such as homelessness, unable to manage affairs. It is no longer only danger to self, others, or gravely disabled.

Why would I make that up?
So I went way back in my post history and all of my posts on the poli board have been wiped. I wonder if the mods deleted threads and posts before a certain point?
It's interesting because I started threads on the Help Board in 2010 asking why some of the threads I started on the poli board were anchored or moved to the OT but those poli board threads aren't in my post history anymore. But oh my goodness, some of the old posters who posted in those threads... manwich (probably the funniest poster to ever grace TD) and DollaChoppa <3.
I miss the silly TD.
Anorther silly Help Board thread referencing disappeared PT threads
I guess old OT posts got wiped, too. I still have posts on sports boards in my post history though, and the help board, etc.
OK, here's a post from 2010 of me mocking liberals.

Honestly, the more humane thing was forcing them into treatment
Keeping people stabilized once they are out of treatment is the hard part. We can't force people living their lives to take medicine or stay sober.

Time to build back the Greenwell Springs Hospital.

Spanberger and VA Dems write actual bills which will become permanent laws
Trump writes meaningless executive orders that are unenforceable and carry no actual weight
A chronically blue, individual state legislature vs. a thin majority in Congress, great comparison LOL

That graph tells the story. These people mostly get institutionalized anyway at taxpayer dollars - in jails or prison. And a huge amount of them are homeless.
There’s got to be a middle ground between the 1950s style asylums and letting them roam untreated on the street committing crimes.
