Trump wants tech companies to foot the bill for new power plants due to AI and consumption

President Donald Trump wants PJM Interconnection to hold an auction in which tech companies bid on new electricity generation, a White House official told CNBC.
PJM serves more than 65 million people across 13 states and Washington, D.C.
Electricity prices have exploded on PJM due in large part to data centers.
Another policy I can agree with. Why should citizens bills go up? They still get charged for Ai use.

Electricity prices have exploded in recent years on PJM Interconnection due in large part to the data centers that tech companies are building to train and power artificial intelligence.
The PJM grid serves more than 65 million people across 13 states and Washington, D.C. Its service area includes northern Virginia, the largest data center market in the world.
President Donald Trump wants PJM to hold an emergency auction in which the tech companies would bid on contracts for new electricity generation, a White House official told CNBC.
Trump wants PJM to build $15 billion of new baseload power generation, the official said. He also wants PJM to cap the amount that existing power plants can charge in the grid’s capacity market to protect ratepayers, the official said.

Yep. If these companies need the plants then they can pay for them without government help

The cost of mini nuclear power systems to power large manufacturing and data centers is upon us
Of course, whether at the power company billing the public, or at the source, the public will pay for it regardless.

As they should. It is a cost of doing business.

Refineries build their own power. Sell some of it to communities. Same should be applied here.

Do not, do not waste money and time over wind or solar. If you can move a Carrier for years with a small nuclear plant. Do it.
Having worked or wind and solar…..first hand knowledge about the crap being sold. Stop them now.
Wind and soar will not solve uninterrupted power production.

Bogalusa has two 200 megawatt generators just sitting there, owned by Entergy as backup. I fully suspect that trumps announcement will get someone to consider using those generators for a data center

Trailer mounted or within a fence?

President Trump said this exact thing months ago when they signed the Genius Act. Not sure why this thread gets posted on here every day. This is old news.

He’s not wrong. The amount of electricity those data centers require is unreal
