Why wouldn’t an aircraft carrier be able to conduct flight operations while transiting? Isn’t that kinda the whole point of aircraft carriers?

Beats me. Maybe they could use a couple of days to lock on to potential targets and threats.
My SIL was an officer on the USS Ronald Reagan. I’ll ask him.
ETA his answer:
There’s definitely truth to that though I’d be surprised if they are not obviously doing most of that in transit. I’d expect it means they also need to do either a port visit or at-sea transit of supplies that will make them more operationally ready and it takes time to get it unpacked, loaded, functioning
I mean you’re talking a small city out there so it takes a bit.
Back to my uninformed opinion: It might also be true that a significant amount of the carrier’s planes might be intended for shore base, and that might take a little time, too.

The mission is not to just conduct air ops. A carrier can certainly conduct operations while moving in open sea when they have too.
But here the mission is to conduct air ops, coordinate with Israel air ops, coordinate with us land based aircraft, defend Israel against missile attack and drone attack as they did in June,, potentially attack hezbollah or the houthis, offensive guided missile attacks, and they are still waiting on destroyers to catch up with the fleet to provide protection for the fleet and Israel from missiles.
This is a massive operation and not just a carrier protecting itself while at open sea in the pacific. There is a lot of coordination, preparation and planning going on with this operation.
It’s always better to take time to prepare for the chaos that will erupt when Iran starts unloading their missile inventories than to sail in with guns blazing. The carrier group is fully capable of both but here they certainly need time to get their ducks in a row.

Dear Compatriots,
Iran stands on the threshold of a great and historic transformation, and the decisive factor in this moment remains the will and conscious action of the Iranian people. It is we who must play our pivotal role at the right time and prevent scenarios contrary to the will of the nation from being imposed on the country.
In this path, the role of the military, law enforcement, security forces, and the rank-and-file of government institutions is decisive. During the National Revolution of the Lion and Sun of Iran, many honorable forces, by disobeying repressive orders, stood alongside the people. Reliable reports indicate that, especially the police and army forces, refrained from using weapons against the people, and the regime resorted to plainclothes agents, Basij, IRGC, and non-Iranian mercenaries to carry out the killings.
Revealing documents and images of the massacres and the identities of the perpetrators, delivering the bodies of the fallen, assisting detainees, helping to rescue medical personnel, and the establishment of underground clinics were among the actions carried out with the cooperation of defecting forces within the regime’s institutions. Nevertheless, it is clear that the number and resources of these forces are limited compared to the regime’s repressive apparatus, and for the balance of power to be established, international humanitarian intervention is essential.
Now that the likelihood of such intervention is higher than ever before, a narrow window of opportunity remains for military and law enforcement commanders—especially army commanders and other officials whose hands are not stained with the blood of the nation—to separate their fate from the criminal regime.
The choice is yours: by joining the people, you can save your own lives and the lives of your families and share in the nation’s victory; or you can tie your fate to the sinking ship of the Islamic Republic and drown with Khamenei and his regime.
In this new phase of the National Cooperation Campaign, I invite you, when the live broadcast of the newly established Iran National Revolution TV begins, to scan the campaign QR code and connect with my special team. The test broadcast of this network has recently started on the Yahsat satellite.
The fate of Iran rests in the decisions we make today. With responsibility and courage, we can write a new chapter in the history of the Iranian nation.
Long live Iran,
Reza Pahlavi

Indicators we are getting very close to a rescue operation in Iran: • PM Netanyahu: “We are in very complex and challenging days. No one knows what the future holds.” • Israel Opposition Leader Yair Lapid: If war erupts with Iran, politics pauses. Full unity behind the government and the IDF. • Non-essential U.S. Embassy personnel in Beirut being evacuated. • 4 RC-135 Rivet Joint aircraft deploying into theater. • 6 E-3 AWACS aircraft now in theater.
