What are a lot of Marines that are in line units doing in Afghanistan right now? Patrolling.

Very far from the truth.

There’s an assload of Marines sitting stateside. You’ve got people in active line units that go entire enlistments without deploying at the moment.

So you can confirm that you are a part of an active duty infantry unit that is not out to deploy within 3 years? Between SPMAGTF's, 3 east coast MEU's, 3 west coast MEU's, the 31st, and UDP cycles I dont believe.

You are also forgetting about WTI commitments, ITX (2 bn's training 6 or 7 times a year), and mountain ex. Finally, training is teep'd and budgeted for years out (look up the fydp, hint: f stands for five). Throwing a curve ball like border defense at the Marines hurts them in a unique, drastic way (did the POTUS specifically task the USMC to defend the border or NORTHCOM).

Stop viewing this so narrowly and try to understand how DoD taskings get filled and what the CMC's role is. You might learn something.

At which point did I claim that?

in terms of combat arms the numbers are not there to add in border deployments especially for AD

Yes there are, take away some overseas training and reroute them to the border.

Again, I do not necessarily think this is the job that Marines are supposed to be doing, but that we could do it.

There’s a fence all along the border right now?

I say plenty. You and some of these others aren't intelligent enough to figure things out.

Name the training that needs to go. Africa lion, balikatan, talisman sabre? What do you think is dispensable and what training overseas involves battalions which aren't already deployed? Most foreign training is supported by MEU's or UDP's.

Dude you're a fricking liberal.

I would love to see your ASVAB score to see why you ended up an 0-grunt-11.

Patrolling the border is not the mission set of an expeditionary force and it doesn’t get such force at its best readiness

In some parts yes and there has been for some times

I really hope you are not a NCO or officer bc you should not be making any high level decisions. If so they need to get you to PME real fast

For the Marines to be the best they can be yes

Training and readiness is more important than spending months on the border

That’s the whole point

I dont know, maybe phase 0 shaping and bilateral or multilateral training to stem Chinese influence in the Pacific?

Everyone acts as if the USMC is having some sort of deterent effect at the southern border. Why not do this the right way and use a force who has DSCA (defense support of civil authorities) enablers? It's not the Marine Corps.

Exactly. The civil military divide and one junior enlisted view is concerning. Patrolling the border is a far cry from combined arms exercises and building proficiency in partner operations.

Go on record here. Do you think that the primary focus of Marines in Afg right now is USMC pure "patrols"? Are we there right now augmenting Afghan border patrol and ICE?
