People who haven't been on one or seen one up close really can't fathom how absolutely colossal they are. I got to board and tour a carrier in San Diego when I was about 10 and I was completely exhausted afterwards. It's a damn floating city.

Why is a vessel that size even close to an aircraft carrier to begin with.

Depending on where it was some places the water deep enough to run gets very small.

Maybe no lights on the ship but that's not an excuse right

Why is the captain of an aircraft carrier getting that close to a ship that could be loaded with an explosive device. That Captain's career just nosedived real quick.

Isn't the rule of thumb the bigger vessel has the right of way?

Next I would ask political leaning and associations.

I find it ridiculous to believe that an aircraft carrier hit a cargo ship like that by some accident.

Did this happen under way at sea or in a port or harbor environment? If at sea, somebody will hang for lack of situational awareness. No unaccounted for vessel should have been anywhere near the Truman. If in a port environment probably a maneuvering screw up. Captains mast next up. Whoever had the con is in deep do do.

Yeah, this is up there with “flying a training mission across the landing path of a busy commercial airport” in terms of shite that just should not be happening.

Not really a question is it, can’t imagine a scenario where that ship is allowed in range at sea

"The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) was involved in a collision with the merchant vessel Besiktas-M at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time, Feb. 12, while operating in the vicinity of Port Said, Egypt, in the Mediterranean Sea," a statement from the U.S Navy's Sixth Fleet said.

I assumed it was trying to dock and that's how it happened. I can't imagine this happening at sea. Still a major F up.

I don't know how, but this is all 100% Pete Hegseth's fault. No doubt about it.

Isnt there an entire surface fleet designed to keep other vessels away from our carriers?

Was this coming into port?
