When I arrived at Parris Island MCRB in 1968 I was 100% sure that it was the right thing to do. Eight months later I started having doubts after being involved in many different engagements with Charlie and the NVA.
When I returned back to the States and had access to American media reports, those doubts deeped.
Looking back today, I believe what prolonged the war was U.S. Politics and the military war complex, not the enemy. We would have ended that war a whole lot earlier and so many lives saved if we would have been allowed to engage the enemy and fight the way we were taught. It was about the money. Politicians and the war industries got rich...I got despised and spit on.

Just as Chinese Communist arms and ammo killed over 54,000 in Vietnam, the Chinese Virus continues to kill U S Citizens at the hands of the Chinese Communist party! Criminals!

Of the many images I retain from that war are three most prominent.
1. That f***ing bitch sitting on that AA gun.
2. Johnson pouring over bomb damage assessment photos with a magnifying glass.
3. Despite the fact that the Tet offensive was a massive military defeat for the North/VC, Walter Cronkite declaring the war is unwinnable

I was a kid but, I do remember it fairly well. Back then, everybody watched the evening news on one of the networks. Mostly, it was Walter Cronkite. He and reporter Dan Rather literally rooted against America in their nightly broadcasts. Finally, Cronkite declared that we had lost the war on national TV. I think it was after the Tet Offensive battle if I’m not mistaken.
Even then, the media were highly progressive and hated America. They just did a better job of hiding it.

During those years, how obvious was it that the US Left were actively rooting for the USA to lose that war and for the Viet Cong to win that war?

Piles of bodies on the news every night, to let us know we "may" have lost a few soldiers but lookey here at all these "gooks" WE killed.

Pretty much, but the Left didn't have their own political party then and most of the protesting was a result of self-interest (draft) not ideology.

I remember LBJs speech when he announced his big escalation.
"My fellow American, my heart is breaking tonight." He was responsible for the killing of so many Americans.
What a piece of crap he was.

And this vile, evil, filthy f*cking traitorous C*NT is still a hero of the left.
Would have been great if some F4 jockey lobbed a missile in there while she was fraternizing.
I'm sure they knew exactly where she was and we told explicitly NOT to do that. fricking rules of engagement....

The political left was much more moderate, almost conservative, then.
?? Who were some of the lefts leaders back in the 60's 70's that were almost conservatives??
Serious question.

I think the soldiers figured it out when the left was spitting on them as they returned.
Was never spit on, but was asked if I enjoyed killing babies.

I've said for years the Beatles were more responsible for changing American culture than anyone else was in my lifetime. I stand by it today.

Many people thought by her actions that she contributed to a few thousand deaths of our brave soldiers. I can't argue that. Another hollywood actress thinking she is running this country.

Vietnam: Let's send the white working class halfway around the world so nobody is around to protest and stop our infiltration of universities and politics. Then, let's shite on them when they come back
This but we should've never been there. We were fighting with one hand tied behind our backs with no clear objectives along side and for people who didn't want us there. We also were fighting against a well trained guerrilla army on their turf and they didn't care how many men they lost they would just keep coming.
Should of told the French after WWII to stay the F out.
The South Vietnamese leaders wanted a dictatorship not democracy.
Ho Chi Min would've organized the revolution without becoming friends with Russia and China
Then China would've tried to take over Vietnam and we could've helped stop that.

It wasn't just the left but year after year of a stalemate with no winning plan in sight that put the war on a bad footing with the majority of Americans.
Like Afghanistan now people just wanted our troops home.
Then there is Hanoi Jane

That's why Kent State was such a mess. Those kids who were killed by the guard were peaceful protesters.
They destroyed downtown Kent's businesses and then started throwing bricks at 11 National Guardsmen. That is hardly what I would call peaceful.

So, I'm wondering whether it was quite this obvious back in the day during that very tough war.
The democrats were scared of China. They thought a more aggressive fight by us would bring China into the fray. So I saw it as a limited less aggressive with many casualties without winning. But I have to believe our guys were fighting hard for their country and the south.
