Maybe the infirm should just stay at home instead.

Well, in some places you have to wear one to go inside certain public places businesses, stores, etc. No one can help having to wear one there.
There are also people who have other reasons to wear them, such as preexisting health conditions that put them at greater risk of getting seriously ill if they get coronavirus.

The who is telling people to wear them.
No they're not. I just read their disclosure on their website today, which is why I posted what I did.
from said disclosure
quote:
Medical masks should be reserved for health care workers.
The use of medical masks in the community may create a
false sense of security, with neglect of other essential
measures, such as hand hygiene practices and physical
distancing, and may lead to touching the face under the masks and under the eyes, result in unnecessary costs, and take masks away from those in health care who need them most,especially when masks are in short supply.
Persons with symptoms should:
• wear a medical mask, self-isolate, and seek medical
advice as soon as they start to feel unwell. Symptoms can
include fever, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and difficulty
breathing. It is important to note that early symptoms for some people infected with COVID-19 may be very mild;
• follow instructions on how to put on, take off, and
dispose of medical masks;
• follow all additional preventive measures, in particular,hand hygiene and maintaining physical distance from other persons.
All persons should:
• avoid groups of people and enclosed, crowded spaces;
• maintain physical distance of at least 1 m from other
persons, in particular from those with respiratory
symptoms (e.g., coughing, sneezing);
• perform hand hygiene frequently, using an alcohol-based
hand rub if hands are not visibly dirty or soap and water
when hands are visibly dirty;
• cover their nose and mouth with a bent elbow or paper
tissue when coughing or sneezing, dispose of the tissue
immediately after use, and perform hand hygiene;
• refrain from touching their mouth, nose, and eyes.
Don't see anything in there about non-sick people being told to wear masks
we also have this from the WHO
quote:
“From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual,” Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said at a news briefing from the United Nations agency’s Geneva headquarters. “It’s very rare.”

that's from a month ago. Seems like they can't make up their minds right?
However, that same article you posted provided this
quote:
"Masks on their own will not protect you from Covid-19," Dr Tedros said.

Has anyone ever claimed they are 100% effective?

No one has claimed that Mickey

Have I ever argued that people claimed they were? Nonetheless, "Masks on their own will not protect you from Covid-19" doesn't suggest they're effective at all. What is effective, according to the WHO, is staying home if you're sick, washing your hands, avoiding crowded areas....you know, common sense. Stay away from areas where you could be exposed to sick people, and wash yoyr hands like you should be doing regardless if there is a pandemic.
And the most important thing to do...
quote:
The cornerstone of the response in every country must be to find, isolate, test and care for every case, and to trace and quarantine every contact.
That is what we know works. That is every country’s best defense against COVID-19.

BS, you need to speak to some real doctors that have been treating patients for longer than your doctor has been alive. My doctor said that most of the people that have died from this would have died within a year anyway.

Was in FL last week and I work with a few people with compromised immune systems.
I would feel like shite if I passed it to them.

They are so ineffective that its not worth the trouble. Just like social distancing.
We've known the basic transmission rate since February... everyone will tell you even with 100% quarantines (and these are not quarantines) the virus would still spread.
And those gloves people wear are nothing bu germ spreaders.
This really isn't difficult, setting up strawmen points isn't going to change the facts.

Mask slows down immunity, won’t stop the China flu.....
Posted on 6/30/20 at 6:23 am to GeauxFightingTigers1
Please someone explain this to me like I’m a three year old.
As far as I know there are only two ways to get rid of a virus:
1. Develop a vaccine that stops transmission of the virus and allows it to die
2. Develop a herd immunity amongst transmission groups so the virus stops transmission and dies.
From the start this shutdown was all about “Flattening the curve”. It was never about stopping the virus. And as soon as the doomsday projections were proven bogus the goalposts shifted. The “second wave” is inevitable and expected right? We don’t have a cure and we slowed herd immunity with the shut down.
Am I wrong?

It is an ineffective effort that is capable of causing more harm than it prevents
The virus can pass through all known major mask types - easily.
The populace doesn't understand mask use
Guidance from health organizations recommends AGAINST their use
It is virtue signaling nonsense
It empowers political forces, as it is designed to do, to exert their will on constitutional rights furthering the absurd political strife being tried by violent Democrats

I agree but I have to work. If retail vendors I buy supplies from won’t let me in their stores because government officials mandate to them to make customers wear masks, then how can you blame said retail establishments and the people who use them to make a living?
Are you going to feed my family? The retail establishments families? It’s easy to talk big on a forum but life has more moving parts than an online forum.
