Only context I've heard it used is to kick someone out of a bar, eg. Security or bartender 86 a guy for being too drunk or rowdy
this

it was old time bartender code to stop serving a drunk

In case you ever wondered where the agent # came from

Although, now that I think about it, "86" doesn't seem any easier or harder to write than "no."

But it’s unmistakable. The word “no” can look like a scribble. It’s like pilot-speak, “tango, foxtrot” etc.

First time I heard it used in real life was working in a restaurant. E.g., “86 crabs!” yelled out from the kitchen.

It means you’re out of crabs or just not going to serve more to the greedy black people at table 7 on the patio. (See other thread for reference.)

Sure he is. But he won’t be charged

Back in the mob days, when someone said “go 86 him” - it meant to drive a person 8 miles out into the desert and put him 6 feet into the ground

I've actually never heard that reasoning, which is great, but I know it meant to kill something.

It was also used to get rid of something or to stop something that you are doing. I have never heard "86" as referring to murder or assassination

When you use the term in reference to a specific person there is nothing else it could possibly mean. You've never heard anyone say, "That Tboy sure is a smart, knowledgeable fellow", but you still understand what the words mean.

Now in context of 86 47, it means to eliminate or get rid of Trump, which is dubious.

It could be interpreted as via impeachment but that's not a viable solution with the balance of power in congress right now

To pretend that no one could possibly interpret in a more sinister way is just dishonest though

It means to kill something. We used it when I worked in restaurants to communicate we were out of a product. A "dead" menu item that needs to be communicated.

“86 the ham & eggs” = kill the order.

Comey knew exactly what he was posting. He also knew it was just vague enough to be open to interpretation.

There's no doubt that the post expressed a desire for an assassination but it's not so clear that that's a crime. Is it conspiracy just to say that you'd like to see it? I don't think so.

This is incorrect. It’s used in the restaurant industry for taking something off an order. Like “86 the pickles and mayo.” Although I have heard it used as slang for offing someone I think the most common usage is the restaurant thing.

This isn’t happening in a vacuum.

There have been 2 very public attempts already. And there are a lot of very disturbed individuals who could well view this as a call to action from someone who they consider an authoritative figure. And Comey well knows that.

My experience in the restaurant industry is it was just to tell you what they were out of

I've never seen it used in the fashion you're describing but they already had computer systems when I was working in the restaurant industry

Oh, he deserves the scorn and criticism I'm just not clear on what exactly he could be charged with.

This. Generally it’s items you ran out of.

A nice restaurant with fresh supplies often has an “86 board” or “86 list” on the computer. Something like:

86
Lobster
Choc pie
Snapper

I’ve never heard the 8 miles out and 6 fr deep.

I always read it was from a bar in the Prohibition days that had 2 entrances, one in the front and the back door went to 86 street. If the cops came, they would tell everyone to 86. Leave out the back.

I would disagree it’s a term ‘everyone knows’, as plenty don’t. But if someone used 86 themselves, it could definitely be easily implied it meant to eliminate something.

It's taking something off the menu, probably because you're out of it.

I was kind of vaguely aware that the term had some mob/prohibition era etymology.

86 FLTech.

Come get me, dipshit. Meanwhile, you stand by the guy who chose to do nothing in response to hearing they're trying to kill his VP.
