Civil war was about the role of the 10th amendment. Slavery was defiantly the issue in question that triggered the split. The central question was did the federal gov't have the power to outlaw slavery or was that a state issue. So, to say the civil war was about slavery is correct. So say it was about states right is correct and to say it was about succession is also correct.
Now what defines southern culture? I would argue that what defines it as the most purest form of American exceptionalism and a truly fundamentalist belief in the constitution. So going back to what the OP published about the belief that tearing down statues of Robert E. Lee somehow diminishes southern culture, I disagree, because southern culture is based on American exceptionalism, not the confederacy.

I don't think of southern culture as being related to war history. I think of it as the styles of dealing with people IRL every day. I read an interesting survey about 5 years ago that was taken from veteran business sales reps who traveled all over the U.S. and were asked to rate the most polite states. All of them were southern.
It all came down to small things like a man giving up his seat to a lady or always saying 'please...' and 'thank you.' And especially: 'Women in the south do not use foul language in public.'

Just recently read “This Fierce People” by Alan Pell Crawford. Great book about the importance of the Southern people in the War for Independence. It supports the idea that Southern men were a key part of the fighting force that allowed our nation to be founded.

The South had the crazy notion that the Federal Government was potentially a force for oppression. Obviously, as time has passed, it has become clear that the Feds are a benevolent force for good and these fears were unfounded.

Assume "Lima" is a poster. So why would you take one single poster and paint the whole South with his color?
Southern culture is awesome. It is the the BEST culture left on terra firma. It encompasses millions of people and centuries. And you wanna take some oblique cheap shot at it?
