To stop the communists over there. Who would have thought at the time that they would wind up over here in the Democrat Party.

Same reason we fought Gulf War I and II. Military Industrial Complex. Who benefited from these wars? It wasn’t the American people.

The organizing principal for any society is for war Mr. Garrison.

I have a relative with the 1000-yard stare, still. I have friends that lost their dads. JFK didn't want to go. LBJ gave "them" their war. Vietnam Vets have lost more and deserve the most respect than any other war the US has fought since 1812.

This

the Gulf of Tonkin false flag is declassified. But the media won't cover it. Even a Vice Presidential nominee, who was there, let it be known (Stockdale), and what does the media do? Gets their SNL team to make fun of him on Saturday Night Live.

And funny, as for the "domino theory", where did Leon Trotsky get monetary and housing support before he helped instigate the Bolshevik revolution?

New York City.

Retrospectively?
None!

Was just over there. The people are pro-western and friendly. Had we possessed a looking glass in the 1960's to see Vietnam of 2018, we would not have even considered a war, much less fought one.

Is there a good explanation for it?
Depends on what you consider "good".

On a contemporary basis, LBJ wanted him a gotdamned wah wit dem commy bastids. LBJ wanted it badly. He felt a war would make him look Presidential. It might help bury the JFK memory which LBJ was desperate to do.

The amazing thing is that most of them are so ignorant they don't even realize they're Communist dupes.

Thank you but no. We did no more and no less than all the U.S. Military personnel have done since this Country started. We placed the needs of the Country ahead of our own. We are proud to have stood the line in our time.

The men and women who have fought in the Middle East are standing the line now. Somebody will need too tomorrow.

Not sure it's a good explanation, but I think it's the true one: Cold War hysteria.

2 million civilians plus 60000 young Americans seems like a high toll for a “Cold War”.

The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution was the excuse which escalated US presence in Southeast Asia. Vietnam was never a declared war but a police action. Permission was needed to exchange gunfire in many skirmishes, handicapping our troops. A terrible time for those who served in the 60’s. Combat veterans to this day undergo annual agent orange screening to detect cancer.

T'was part deux
In part1

- the French mucked things up for about twenty years (maybe 15 - not looking it up) before we officially intervened. Not continent to lose another sphere of influence (think colonial influence, infrastructure, finances ) they did away the just formed (infantile - barely neonatal) democratic government of South Vietnam.

The current political situation of that part of the world, in that day an age day, was defined by post WWII committee. And these guys (fresh out of one war) had diplomatically created (think simplistically) a north/south (communist/democratic) country. So logically it was a no brainier that both Russian and China had an interest in keeping the north going. However in the south Britain and the US decided to let the French have a go at doing things their way. After a decade plus (15-20 years) of failure and losing their colonial influence anyway the country still remained a domino in the cold war and then ^^^^ what he said above ^^^^.

You might look into Robert McNamara (Sec Def and President of World Bank) for more.

Good? not in hindsight. The Vietnam War or IndoChina War was a post WWII clash that was intended to stop the spread of global communism. So in a way it was part of The Cold War although it was not nuclear.

The French started the IndoChina War many years before we came in and when they left South Vietnam sought help from the US. Like the suckers we are we went...

Cold War.

Soviet Union was expanding into vulnerable areas of the world in an attempt to starve out capitalism.

LBJ and to some unknown extent JFK, saw French Indochina as vulnerable. South Vietnam was the battle front. Unfortunately LBJ thought he was a military mastermind and sent political messages with bombs. Should have supported locals to fight their own war. Unfortunately the local leadership stole our aid since Americans were fighting their war. Then we weren’t and they lost when Nixon got in hot with Watergate.

It fell then the dominos of Cambodia and Laos fell too.

Also at this time Cuba was sending it’s army to Africa were communist we’re gaining control of Subsahara and Arab regions.

We did learn and countered Soviet influence in Nicaragua and Afghanistan by supporting the locals.

Fortunately Reagan won the Cold War in the 80s.

Did we though?

Since “winning” there has been a slow but steady drift left in this country and it only seems to be drifting further.

The commies were in it for the long con. They may have lost the big battle, the “Cold War”. But they are still fighting the war.
