Not sure if it has been posted on her yet but Roger from Men In Blazers put together a pretty good podcast on the late 90's USMNT. If you have some time to kill its a pretty quick listen and its good.

1 episode in. This is legit. Roger is awesome at storytelling and the whole thing is very well produced.

He is good at that

Side note though - Roger on the MiB live shows annoys the shite out of me

I had no idea we were playing that well going into the 98 World Cup and I had no idea our draw was that terrible.

Same here. I didn't really start following U.S. soccer closely until 2002. I vaguely remember 1998 and being pretty disappointed with the results. So this is interesting stuff. It seems between 1995-97 we had one of our best teams ever, based on this documentary. Then it all came crashing down in 1998.

And that David Regis was Julian Green before Julian Green could even walk.

Can someone give a light Cliffs?

The main things I know are a) Sampson made some bizarre roster choices b) Harkes slept with Wynalda's wife, so he was off the team and c) Iran had their best generation of players ever at their peak form in 1998.

Yeah, but we were still much more talented, but Sampson was feeling so much pressure after the Germany loss that he set up an XI with 5 changes that game and played a ridiculously attacking style that burnt us twice.

Also, Lalas and Balboa basically staged a coup against Sampson.

Yeah, pretty badass as frick to go on strike up until the day before the first game and then win that game.

And then beat the shite out of Argentina, and the story about Maradona was also awesome.

I just finished episode 5 and I only wish Roger had expanded a bit. maybe 45 minutes instead of 30.

but he’s also working on a public broadcasting budget so it’s understandable. he clearly did this because he was passionate about the topic and wanted to do it, not for the money

he’s a great story teller

I followed the 98 world cup, knew we were getting better, but didn't know about the harkes stuff. Actually had no idea why he wasn't on that team until now.

I had no idea who he was until this. It was hilarious that they go to interview him and he speaks almost no English. At least our current Germans have an American parent and don't have to get citizenship pushed through.
