All these players seem ethnically African or Slavic though
Immigrant working-class kids happen to play working-class sport. I think a small pluarity of players have German Swiss roots, with seven players by my very quick and cursory count. Three players on the Swiss team have Iberian roots, three have Bosnian roots with one a Bosnian Croat, three have Albanian descent, two have Cameroonian roots, one player is of Turkish descent, with four of the players have mixed African/Swiss parentage, and three players are African with no Swiss parentage but grew up in the country.
It is genuinely an interesting question as to why the Africanness of Mbabu, for example, might be more notable than coming from the French-speaking region of Switzerland, as linguistic divisions in Europe were deeply meaningful especially in border areas, which have long histories of admixture between ethnicities but very specific language programs to ensure everyone in the region spoke one particular language. The story should be about how Swiss have handled integration of immigrant populations far better than most other European countries, probably because the country itself has a long history of diverse origins, and thus has a robust system in which to give people regional and national identity. If we were to rate such a thing, the Swiss might be the only Old World country who handles integration decently well, though that is a fairly provocative statement.

10/10 post. I love this stuff. Where’s a good place to start reading about this stuff, you always have solid info on linguistics and ethnicity dispensation/history.

My team has a corner routine where half starts on the goal line and the other half on the 6 and they sprint to switch spots. It’s chaos.

Isn't immigration to Switzerland notoriously difficult, though. That likely helps out with integration. If you make entry/remaining costly, only those willing to pay the cost will stick around.

The best primers are usually the compilations of historical commentaries or specific series through major academic publishers like Cambridge, Norton, and Oxford among others. Use the library to get copies for eras you are interested in, follow the citations for things that interest you and then work backward that way. I guess people do podcasts, but I can't sit through any history podcasts because I prefer to read.

It has gotten more difficult for non-EFTA citizens, but only relatively recently. The main difficulty is the length of time to get permanent residency, which is 10 years.
