The "pack-ball" mentality is from how we introduce the game to our young kids.
Parents want, for thier own benefit, an actual game because we need winners & losers. To this end we throw 10 kids out on a field with maybe a hour of practice a week and say "go score a goal". At that point the field is so chaotic you can't provide direction.
In Europe the games are less of a priority, and if they do play they are small-sided (3v3).

Aren’t we focusing on small side games here now too? And more futsal.

I guess it depends what you mean by "Focusing".
Club teams do that because it's effective. However, the vast majority of kids in this nation play recreationaly (I.e. Ymca, city/neighborhood leagues, etc.) and not for Club or academy teams.

I think there are far fewer kids in the US that are willing to chase the dream of playing professionally, but I’d say the number of U13 kids who probably could isn’t that bad right now. Those U13 stand outs can go play other varsity sports in high school, and have a helluva time, or give it up to go train at an academy. That’s a tough sell here…not so much other places.
At U13, if you’re not in serious, focused training you are falling behind the rest of the world. At U15 training in Europe or at a major US club….

Yeah it’s crazy how early and advanced development has to be for you to move up. It’s not like basketball where you shoot up 8 inches in the 9th grade and all of the sudden scouts are looking at you

We still have a couple of kids on our team who you have to keep a constant eye on bc they will legit just chase the ball like a dog
It was funny as hell to watch JP Public schools and Chalmette play girls soccer and then watch Dominican or Mount Carmel play
