Unbelievable they field a competitive team. ~300,000 people in the country that is cold and nasty weather for 8 months a year.

Completely revamped their entire program over a decade ago. They have a bunch of indoor centers so people can play year round, and small sided pitches are everywhere there.

Thats only half the equation. I'd say its not crazy to say that Uruguay is 10X as good as Iceland.

8% of the population is at The Euros
Iceland have their entire country behind them at the Euros. Well, not quite literally, but pretty damn close because more than 8 percent of the nation's population applied for tickets to Euro matches to see their team play at the tournament.
According to UEFA, Iceland fans applied for 26,985 tickets to see their national team play, which is stunning considering that the entire country has a population of roughly 330,000.
For comparison's sake, if 8 percent of the United States population applied for tickets to an event, there would be 26 million people applying.

They seem to have an incredible gene pool in Iceland when you think about how they perform in all the strongman competitions in addition to this soccer team.

Estonia has 4x the population of Iceland and Portugal beat them 7-0 last week.

Yeah, seems their government really made a large, long term financial commitment to facilities and tons of salaried coaches and they are certainly reaping the rewards.

When they have all their top guys, they are good. But not 10x better.

It's amazing what organizational commitment, excellent defensive structure, and tactics suited to personal will do.

I don't see how it's debatable.
