Was about to compare to Croatia, but after seeing the Croatian population is 4.23 million... Iceland wins

Damn. That is just a bit more than Louisiana's population. If Louisiana ever produces a player of Modric's quality (or Rakitic or whoever else they have) I will be very, very content.

It's amazing what organizational commitment, excellent defensive structure, and tactics suited to personal will do.

Imagine if a rich country with 320 million people and massively growing interest in the sport implemented this.

I'm telling you, listening to Rog Bennett describe Iceland's youth training setup on MIB made me incredibly jealous.

It should. But I imagine it's a lot easier when the scale is so small.

One city has ~200k people aka 2/3 of the country's population... Yeah, I would say so

What they implement for the country is what needs to happen in each city in America.

Yeah, that's really how a country as rich and large as the US could become a real threat on the world stage in the future.

However, the people of Iceland supported paying taxes for these expensive government projects.

I would imagine more of our cost would go towards getting coaches certified than anything. We don't need indoor soccer facilities built everywhere. Also we have whales like Nike, UA, etc that we could try to tap into for investment.

I think we need more small sided fields to improve our technique. Doesn't necessarily need to be indoor but a lot of time that's what those fields are.

Yeah, it would seem to be all about a high saturation of excellent coaches available free to kids everywhere.

A bit unrealistic on the level (ratio of kid to coach) of an Iceland but seemingly what would make a nation like the USA (or China) a real threat in just over decade.

5x5, 7x7 fields are very needed. Kids don't need to see a full pitch or a 5 sized ball for a while.....

They need to learn technique (to their GOd given capability), spacing and tactics.

Indeed. It almost seems like our efforts should be concentrated in cities like LA, Houston, Chicago, etc to get the ball rolling so to speak. Lay out a blue print on how to do it in these bigger cities and let it grow from there.

This has been getting bashed but if we are speaking historically this is the correct answer. 3 million people and they have 2 World Cups. That is amazing.

Too lazy to search but there's a pretty good article out there on the webs about Iceland's approach to improving their football.

I'm sure America would be on board for some soccer reform, no?

It is amazing to think they sent a team to euros basically from one city.

I would love to read that article about what they did, ive only heard a little on the topic

It would be impossible to implement across the US but maybe target specific cities/ regions like someone said. NY, LA, Dallas/Houston, Fl

those are hot beds anyway but if overhauled could maybe be more efficient

I also think Louisiana needs a look in by US soccer. Baton Rouge has a ton of player, as does Nola/ Mandeville and even Lafayette. Put some money into organization, coaches and indoor facilities. Grow the ymca and BREC leagues, lower fees of BRSC and create after school programs for poor blacks and create some sort of CASL CYO or middle school league.

Sports are a big part of LA and if we can get soccer on the same level as baseball and football we can produce some serious talent.
