If there is any team who the US could have looked like, it was this Morocco team. I think our first-team midfield is better, especially as all 3 players can play progressive passes, which was unlike Morocco, who had their entire game seemingly running through Amrabat. That fact and how well-organized our midfield was means that if we had a better draw, we could have had a similar run. We even had a moody talismanic and mercurial midfielder, which North African teams usually have in droves.

Yep - how Morocco has done and who they've taken down along the way really emphasizes that the US have zero excuses anymore

We can make a run too

Well we had a manager trying to make us play a style the player pool isn't suited for.

Buy him a ticket back to Madrid. France plays much faster without him

Just watched the replay. Two thoughts:
1) The Mexican ref was terrible. 20 for Morocco should have had at least two yellows.
2) Argentina wins Sunday. France cannot give up that much possession with a defense that is that loose.

Pretty sure Morocco had the lowest XG of all teams in the group stage or something crazy. They just happened to put a few away.

If we had the offensive production (via xG) that Morocco had and just defended for our lives with runs forward whenever possible, like we used to, I think people would be unhappy with that too. I do wish we had done the mid block we ran against England more often, but honestly we look like shite on the counter. I think that will get better with a new coach, and as our players mature a bit.

What bugs me the most is how well-organized we were in the low-to-medium block, but we weren’t organized for the purposes of the counter. We preferred to let the other team play in their block, slowing the transition game down for no real reason. And though our progressions into the final third might have been the best we’ve seen the US do, with smart passing, and fantastic movement between the wingers and wingbacks to create passing lanes, in the final third we had no ideas.

The difference with Morocco and the US was that when they went forward, they went forward off transitions. This was the first time we’ve seen them possess the ball against a team in their preferred block, and not surprisingly they struggled to create quality chances. That’s the lesson here, is that if you want to play in the low-block, you have to take your chances in the transition phase, not against the other team when they are in their defensive set. That’s the exact point of playing in the low-block.

I think one of the problems was that our midfield was a little too good for the rest of the team. Meaning that they were such competent midfielders, why wouldn’t a coach have confidence in them to break teams down? The problem is that it is generally hard for midfielders who play in structured, well-organized systems to also be tasked with creativity in the final third. Thus, it becomes even more odd and frustrating how pensive we were around the box.

This was one of our biggest problems. Who on this team was a scoring threat? I love the control MMA gave us but aside from McKennie on set pieces and late runs none of them are a threat to score. Our wingers aren’t consistent scorers and we don’t have a forward worth a shite. It would have been nice to see a healthy Reyna get some playing time centrally, or even LDLT, to see if we could get some more creativity.
