My god. Do people remember what the 1990s? 2002 felt like we made it.

Calm down snowflakes and stop taking things out of context.

How can you say we underperformed when we literally finished dead last in 1998?

Hell, we had our troubles qualifying for 2002.

And then to say we underperformed by tying South Korea, who hosted the tournament and made the semifinals that year...

We played the hosts to a draw. We got beat by a team who had only one loss in their qualification group, and we beat a team that had the fricking world player of the year in 2001 on it, as well as fricking Rui Costa. You are coloring your perspective by applying current standards to 2002. We weren't expected to do anything in that group.

The contention that we under-performed in 2002 is utterly baseless, given the history before 2002 and what happened afterward.

I don't even buy the contention we under-performed in 2010. I can buy 2014 because we were positionally wayward, but we met expectations in 2010 and exceeded them by some measure in 2002.

Such an underrated tough task, no matter who the host is.

Hell even by current standards a win OR a draw vs Portugal at a World Cup is about as big as it gets for us.

I said earlier that we underperformed in 2010 because we barely beat and tied 2 inferior teams, and you come back with:

quote:

By that logic, we underperformed in the group stage of the 2002 World Cup because we only won one game and lost 3-1 to Poland.

But now, 2002 World Cup group that we were in was basically the group of death and that 2002 team had low expectations to even get out of it. How can you even justify comparing these two things that are not at all alike?

What is this seeding that you are talking about?

The Jozy injury changed everything. He was in the form of his life going into that tournament. Very sad what happened to him just 20 minutes in.

Also, hey, remember that time our coach left the best player in our nation's history at home and brought Aron Johannsson and Chris Wondolowski as back up strikers.

No one said this.

No one expected us to make it out of that group.

An injured Aron Johannsson. And Brad Davis.

As a team, making it out of group stage was the goal, and we did it, so we achieved what we went out there to do, but nothing more. I disagree that we under-achieved.

Not really... that was right in the middle of his Sunderland stint.

It was 2013 when he was putting everything in the net with both AZ and the US.

It's one of those moments that nearly moved me to tears. We missed a clear goal-scoring opportunity right before the third goal when Stewart I think had a clear chance that he scuffed. We got that third goal I thought I was dreaming.

The other moment that nearly moves me to tears is that Donovan goal against Brazil in 2009.

Charlie Davies at South Africa instead of Robbie Findley... We beat Ghana.

Agree to disagree. We had no real partner to pair with Bradley, and he did a pretty superb job supporting Jozy. I'll go watch the games again to see but I don't feel like Bradley under-performed at all.

I think if we had Davies we would have beaten England. We had a clear chance at the end to do it, with that Jozy chance that went off the bar.

"Form of his life" was too much. He played really well in a few games leading up to the tournament. He scored twice vs Nigeria in the final tune up game and looked really good in the others.
