In an interview on LBC, Prince Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud said alcohol would not be sold anywhere during the tournament, including hotels.

Fifa confirmed Saudi Arabia would host the men's World Cup in 2034.

"At the moment, we don't allow alcohol," Prince Khalid told LBC.

"Plenty of fun can be had without alcohol - it's not 100% necessary and if you want to drink after you leave, you're welcome to, but at the moment we don't have alcohol."

Asked whether that meant fans would be able to drink once they returned their hotels, as was the case at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he added: "No, there is no alcohol at all.

"Rather like our weather, it's a dry country.

"Everyone has their own culture. We're happy to accommodate people within the boundaries of our culture but we don't want to change our culture for someone else."

On one hand, I appreciate their unwillingness to change their norms for anything, even the biggest event in the world.

On the other, I'm laughing at the brewing shitstorm and wondering why the world's biggest event would ever be held in a country with such a contrasting culture to most of the world.

Oh yeah....FIFA.

No shite. They don't even change their culture when they [don't even try] to assimilate into the countries they migrate to.

Yeah, I have no problem with their stance on the World Cup. They should never have been considered as a host for a multitude of reasons, this being a major one.

Should have never been awarded it for numerous reasons beyond alcohol sales. The surrounding countries are the ones that will benefit.

Only for matches played in Dammam/Dharan. I think there will be packed flights between Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Manama and KSA during the WC. Advantage, you can hit duty free on the way back to your hotel every day.

Budweiser and other alcohol manufacturers are major FIFA sponsors. I foresee the Saudis playing ball here.

Qatar and Arabia are orders of magnitude different in terms of the power they can exert. I highly doubt FIFA pressure will change anything this go around. I need to find my hand maids tale outfit from 2017

eta- in the interest of not getting into a discussion with akctshually man, i’ll say this.
Qatar is literally a fake country. SA is an empire

It's hard to bribe a ruling family that has so much F-me money that they don't care. KSA is the place that squeezed out our toothpaste tubes crossing the causeway to make sure we weren't hiding booze in them.

We just did a stupid Middle East World Cup. FIFA picks them again only 12 years apart. Bribes must have been off the charts.
