He hasn't earned that title yet and even if he did it doesn't excuse anything his parents did anyway.

We all agree Gio should've played more, but going scorched earth over something implied at a leadership conference that no one ever heard of isn't the answer.

Gio needs to come out and disassociate himself from this.

Gio needs to come out, condemn what his parents did and state that he wants to be a part of the USMNT going forward no matter what and with no drama

This whole situation is so messed up

He would be on such a short string for any manager going forward. He's already borderline not worth the headache unless he distances himself from all of this.

It's a tough spot though, because if he does do that, then he's basically telling his parents to frick off and he is really close with his family, especially after he lost his older brother to cancer. I don't think he needs to say anything publicly about it until he is inevitably asked. I just hope he is in contact with the other USMNT players just to keep an open channel of conversation through all this shite.

His mother said she never threatened anyone, only made a point of comparison between Gio and Gregg.

“I did call Earnie Stewart just after the news broke that Gregg had made negative statements about my son Gio at a leadership conference,” Danielle Reyna said. “I have known Earnie for years and consider him to be a close friend. I wanted to let him know that I was absolutely outraged and devastated that Gio had been put in such a terrible position, and that I felt very personally betrayed by the actions of someone my family had considered a friend for decades.” “I want to be very clear that I did not ask for Gregg to be fired, I did not make any threats, and I don’t know anything about any blackmail attempts,” continued Danielle Reyna, a roommate of Rosalind Berhalter at the University of North Carolina in 1991, when the confrontation with Gregg Berhalter, who played for the school’s soccer team, took place.

She is saying it was because of Gregg’s post WC comments about Gio, not about playing time.

But either she is lying, or….
Gregg said this: “During the World Cup, an individual contacted US soccer, saying they had information about me that would ‘take me down’ - an apparent effort to leverage something very personal from long ago to bring about the end of my relationship with US soccer”

When I read that, I thought he meant that it happened while the US was in the World Cup, and I thought he was saying someone threatened to publicize that story from his past. I think he was implying both of those things.

Now I don’t think either of those things are true.
Why did he say “during the World Cup” when it was after the US had been eliminated? That’s “after the World Cup”, from the perspective of everyone who cares about this story.

Read her further comments:
quote:

"As part of that conversation, I told Earnie that I thought it was especially unfair that Gio, who had apologized for acting immaturely about his playing time, was still being dragged through the mud when Gregg had asked for and received forgiveness for doing something so much worse at the same age. Without going into detail, the statements from yesterday significantly minimize the abuse on the night in question. "Rosalind Berhalter was my roommate, teammate and best friend, and I supported her through the trauma that followed. It took a long time for me to forgive and accept Gregg afterward, but I worked hard to give him grace, and ultimately made both of them and their kids a huge part of my family’s life. I would have wanted and expected him to give the same grace to Gio. This is why the current situation is so very hurtful and hard.”

quote:

She continued: "At the time I called Earnie, many people were trashing Gio on social media due to Gregg’s comments, and I didn’t know when or if this would stop. I just wanted Earnie to help make sure that there would be no further unwarranted attacks on my son. I thought our conversation would remain in confidence, and it didn’t occur to me at the time that anything I said could lead to an investigation. I’m not criticizing Earnie here. I very much commend the recent efforts by U.S. Soccer to address abuse of women players, and I understand now he had an obligation to investigate what I shared. "But I want to be very clear that I did not ask for Gregg to be fired, I did not make any threats, and I don’t know anything about any blackmail attempts, nor have I ever had any discussions about anyone else on Gregg’s staff—I don’t know any of the other coaches. I did not communicate with anyone in U.S. Soccer about this matter before December 11, and no one else in my family has made any statements to U.S. Soccer regarding Gregg’s past at all. I’m sorry that this information became public, and I regret that I played a role in something that could reopen wounds from the past

Unless you think she’s lying, seems like Berhalter and US soccer made this more than it needed to be.

She's insane if she didn't think Earnie and the USSF wouldn't investigate domestic abuse allegations, considering all the shite that recently came to light with the NWSL.

I can only hope that all this drama gets the USSF looking to replace Berhaltner when his contract expires.

What do you think the investigation consists of, and why would it need to be such a public ordeal? All they had to do was confirm Gregg’s account and then internally debate whether it was reason not to consider him for a new contract.

Because they were forced to hire an independent law firm and knew the media would get a hold of it.

They had to come out first, else it would look like they were trying to cover it up. That would've been worst case scenario for them in this social climate.

Forced by whom? His contract was expiring and the incident was thirty years ago?

You need an independent party for this stuff.

The allegations came while he was still under contract. Again, the last thing the USSF needed was for this to appear like they were just trying to let the clock run out on domestic abuse allegations.

Now it's all but certain Greggg is gone, but this looks terrible for everyone involved and all of USSF. I wanted a new manager but not this way.
Everyone is a loser in this scenario.

Way to make the managerial search even shittier for future candidates

She said she only brought up his past to compare maturity of Gio and Gregg at the same age, that’s it. He got a second chance. Gio didn’t. That was her point

I have no reason to doubt Gio’s mom. I have plenty of reasons to doubt Gregg’s account. He comes off like such a drama Queen

and all of USSF

This is a rare time when the USSF handled this perfectly.

Think about it, in 2023, allegations of domestic abuse came out against someone on their staff, and they made the right moves to where the public is actually siding with the abuser and are shitting all over the whistleblower.

Awesome.

She's still insane if she didn't think the USSF would have to investigate that.

I think both sides have set up their stories to protect themselves.

Not a fan of Gregg as much as the next guy but I don’t know how anyone could be on the side of a helicopter parent who essentially blackmailed him.

True they have handled it well

It all just looks bad. What will our next manager be stepping into is my point - good players but needing more depth and a dumpster fire of drama?

Guess it has worked out for some teams in the past

Nobody likes some pissy soccer mom who snitches on something a coach did 30 years ago cause her son didnt get as much playing time as she wanted.
