see no reason the coach has to be American.
Every manager that has won the World Cup has managed their own nations team
Only one Euro was won by a manager not managing his own country (Rahhagel German, won with Greece)
Three Copas were won by a manager not managing his own country
It’s not a written in stone thing, but that’s a pretty big sample size. IF winning the whole damn thing is our goal.
All that said, I’d still be ecstatic for a Klopp level manager for USMNT.

The sample size is that good teams with established footballing history win. Those coaches are winning with their countries because of how those countries develop coaches.
We’d be better off finding a euro-based coach who understands the soccer culture here than waiting for us to develop an elite American coach

That’s correlation, not causation. Countries with teams good enough to win the World Cup simply have far better domestic options than we do.

Consider also that almost all of the powers see their NT-caliber players spend a decent amount of their early career at home all the way through their domestic league. Many never leave to begin with
Ours bypass our domestic league entirely and leave their American "tendencies" behind early. They are scattered all over Europe in very different leagues with very different styles and serving very different roles. We're a team of mutts. It doesn't make sense to force an American manager who is not only less qualified, but also not able to impose a unifying national style (and likely has little to no experience managing talent from disparate philosophies). Arguably MLS coaches should outright be disqualified from consideration for at least the next 20-30 years
The only way we're having sustained success and getting the most out of the pool is with the best managers we can possibly get our hands on

There seems to be a pretty clear shift in the tone from the media after the last game that this is unacceptable.
I’ve noticed this as well
One example:
what ESPNFC’s Jeff Carlisle says regarding a loss today: “If that happens, it will almost certainly mean the end of Berhalter's tenure as U.S. manager. Or at least, one would think.”

Hoping Mama Reyna still has some arrows in the quiver
If we lose tonight and Gregg isn’t fired within 24 hours it’s time for federation heads on spikes

Nah, that whole ordeal made Gregg more of a sympathetic figure than anything.
Keep the crazy out.

Of course he’ll get sacked when this is probably the best the team has played in his tenure

Exactly.
The pattern doesn't hold on the women's side.

actually, it reinforces it... in the US, football, basketball, and baseball are the sports that dominate and take the best athletes.... male athletes simply have more popular options here in the States.... female athletes basically have soccer and basketball, with softball becoming more popular as well...
but in terms of the cream of the crop in America, athlete-wise, for females, soccer is where it's at, while it's football for males....
in the US, soccer has had a very strong culture on the female side, mainly due to it being as popular for females as football is for males

Greggg has been a waste of time and talent. Vibe culture has made us soft. No excuses making excuses for him.
